OK.  Sant Jordi here.  I'm English orginally from Newcastle but living in Barcelona (hence my name here).  I've been following the discussions here for a while.  Not sure that I'll ever be a regular poster.

I come here because the subject interests me (I have a BSc in Biochemistry but work in a completely unrelated field), because my mother in law seems to be becoming a creationist and finally it's easier than working when you have a hangover (like today).

Cheers

Besides, I just delurked on Arden's linguistics thread, admitted to being Welsh and was immediately DT'd ("you're outta here") by J-Dog for not having enough Ws or Ls in my name!

Like many lurkers, I suspect, I am in awe of a lot of the knowledge here and have learned a very great deal.  I have also been surprised by some of the nonsense spouted by people like afdave.

Seriously, this forum is a very good read, often hilarious and always interesting.

So there you go.

I teach middle school science in White Salmon, Washington. As a public school teacher you get some pretty interesting responses to teaching the evolutionary paradigm in biology. I have had a few parents invite me to their churches to hear, the now imprisoned, Kent Hovind speak. I declined, but I regret that now. I would have loved to see a true snake oil salesman do his show. As a teacher you continually have to take courses for professional development, this last spring I took a course at a local community college and was dumbfounded to hear my professor talking about the Great Nochian Flood, the speed of light slowing down, human footprints next to dinosaurs, and radiometric dating inconsistencies. He was a wacko YEC’er.  I spent much of my time at TalkOrigins prepping for our next class where I crushed his pathetic talking points. From there I found the Pandas Thumb and this site as well.

I have found that 8th graders love to learn about the grand picture of life. The love to understand why nature works the way it does. Truly, nothing in nature makes any sense without an understanding of evolutionary theory. Now when students or parents question the wisdom of teaching evolution to their kids, I simply say that this is the best explanation given the observed evidence. I am greatly indebted to the many wise ones here that have shed light of the subject for me.

I must also admit that the antics of the folks at UD are such a crack-up. I just love seeing the gang here just totally crush their idiotic rantings.

To continue, at best I’m only going to make a very modest contribution towards making this board more informative and/or entertaining.  As others have noted, what will make this board more interesting is another creobot, and  after a short layoff, I definitely spent more time here once FTK got active.

She provided a measure of entertainment for a while, but man she got boring fast.  In  contrast, AFD kept me entertained for a couple of months.  To me, the whole AFD thread climaxed with the Portuguese discussion, because it showed that not only did Dave understand nothing about science, he understood nothing about argument.

As Mr. Vibrating makes clear, it’s hard to have an argument if you don’t know what one is.  FTK has tried to avoid getting into a scientific discussion, but in the course of arguing about not arguing, she has demonstrated that her understanding of evidence and logic is on par with Dave’s.

Well, most of the time anything I'd know to say has already been said, sometimes by several people, and often in more detail than I'd have available.

Richardthughes, you magnificent...

...I just registered (de-lurked) at your request, read the rules, and would certainly not want to be considered vulgar in my very first post in this forum.

I stumbled upon The Panda's Thumb, and After the Bar Closes, just when the Kitzmiller decision was released, and have followed both, obsessively, ever since.

This forum has been a real treat, an antidote to the Bush era's theme of return-to-the-dark-ages. Any of you other old-timers remember the August 1972 issue of the National Lampoon? Same basic idea. Panda's Thumb occasionally supplies me with teaching material, and that's pretty good. But After the Bar Closes is, well, the ne plus ultra. Long live the Church Burnin' Ebola Boys!

Hi, my name is deadman_932, and I'm a Cancer, I like long walks in the rain and holding hands. I'm a pretty good cook and I enjoy romance novels and watching Oprah on TiVo.

My favorite colour is ochre and I'm about 5'1" tall and I weigh 473 lbs. I find women really like exploring my folds for any leftovers they can find and my full beard that has many flavors of soup they can enjoy. I raise parasites for a hobby, and I'm currently the proud owner of a 27-foot-long tapeworm named Roger who lives in my lower intestine.

If you think I'm the kind of guy for you, leave me a PM, except if you're Richardthughes, because he's a pig that kept trying to grab my manboobs and rubbing all over me.

Hmmm... well I've commented once or twice here, but usually refrain.
Thinking about it, I reckon I started coming here regularly when the UD thread started up (which coincided with my moving to Australia), prior to that I popped over occasionally from the Thumb (as I recall the first time might have been the ape promiscuity/semen discussion where a lot of the comments got 'walled'    ) Since then it's been a (more or less) regular stop along with the Thumb and various ScienceBlogs.
I'm afraid I don't comment much as I really don't have the strength to go panning for gold in the UD sewer, I guess I'll just titter from the sidelines.
Keep up the good work!

Steverino here....

20 years as a Designer (print and web) and UI/Software Usability Analyst.

I just happened to stumble onto to the Pandas Thumb after doing some googling.  I had gotten into debates regarding the adoption of creation ideas into the public school system and needed some hard scientific data to go along with the legal facts.

Science rocks and you all have my admiration and gratitude for defending not only science but, the unconstitutional intrusion of religion into our schools and government.

I actually started a topic here once asking why so many engineers were IDC.

I mainly read and learn.  Sometimes when I drink, I post something completely ignorant and you have all been kind enough to ignore those posts.  My thanks.

I love baseball and will use it for all sorts of forced analogies that confuse those from countries not blessed with the greatest of all games.

I am an engineer and I make a very good martini.  I also tend to write one sentence paragraphs just like Peter Gammons.  Except I use commas.  I also like one word sentences.  Sometimes.

Is it that lots of engineers lean toward IDC, or is it that engineers who happen to be IDC are more vocal than most IDC people?

Evening all. I have lurked around the endlessly fascinating E/C debate for a few years now. I post very occasionally, but I worry that if I got too involved the rest of my free time would evaporate and my missus would withdraw internet privileges.

Potted bio: Born in Zimbabwe, BA Physics, most of my working life (as a software developer) in London, except for 4 years in the SF Bay Area. I'm now writing trading software for a bank. I'm jolly good at spelling -- British, American and freestyle.

Of course, I'm on the side of reason, but who doesn't think they are?

Er, that's it.

Okay, I visit here to see what the ID wackos are doing without having to pollute my brain by visiting UD or OE. My job (software engineer) has nothing to do with the whole evolution vs. creation issue, but I've followed it with interest for many years.

I have a BS in Biology and a long time interest in Astronomy, but I make my living with computers.  I have family who are into Creationism, including a former brother-in-law who studied at the ICR.  I started reading Panda's Thumb and some of the other blogs because of all the recent court activity over ID.  I enjoy reading the discussions, and I really enjoy learning about all the latest discoveries.  I don't post much myself 'cause I think the pros do a much better job than I could. :)

I orignially found my way to PT while looking for material for teaching Biology for the first time.  I work in a tiny highschool in a tiny town, so even though my training is mostly in chemistry (BS plus some graduate work), I teach all the science classes.  I eventually found my way here, and stayed for the comic catharsis of watching the Davetards of the world demolished.

My thanks to the regulars here for all that you do.  After a day of having to be diplomatic with students who argue that they aren't made of atoms, they're made of dirt, it's refreshing to see that level of ingnorance dealt with by people who don't have to pull their punches.

Wood is made of wood atoms. So dirt is probably made of dirt atoms.

Two BA's.

Hated, loathed and detested science in school.
Now (mainly thanks to the crew at PT) I am a science geek.  I had no idea that there were so many talented people out there that could explain biology.
I lurk around the science blogs continuously and love the discussions that take place.
Trust me, I'm knot lying.

As a forest ecologist, I'm really upset that I missed the tree-pun war.  Unfortunately I don't think that trying to resurrect it would be very poplar.

What's a nice ecologist like me doing hanging out in a place like this?  I grew up Catholic in the east Tennessee Bible belt.  I've always been fascinated by Biblical literalists and our own little Scopes trial.  Especially when as a MSc student in the Dept of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UT, when some candidates for student elections wanted to flag courses that taught evolution so that right-thinking people could avoid them.

Then I moved to Ireland.  My interest in evo-creo reawoke when the Dover trial got some coverage in the papers here.  I looked around to find out what this ID was and found Panda's Thumb and this dive.  (Nice scotch, pity about the decor.)  For the record, there's bugger all interest in ID over here.  I've seen two opinion pieces in the paper supporting ID: one from a religion correspondent and one from a gobshite who enjoys being arrogant and contrary.

If I may step in to make an unendurably pedantic comment, that subtitle should be "I wish to see thy face". Not 'thine'.

'My' is to 'mine' as 'thy' is to 'thine'.

I'm sorry, I'll find my own way out.  :(

In English it used to be possible to use 'mine' before vowels.

Don't know if 'thine' worked the same way, but 'face' doesn't start with a vowel anyway.

I dont think so.  To feel like a creationist you have to invent a lie now, call him a lying atheist and claim victory. Try that, I have often done things like that on their threads and you will feel ... well like a real creationist. It has often been a lot of fun to me  :p ( and actually to some of you too )

Very well. As I infrequently lurker at this forum, I have finally decided to register.

I am a biologist from Germany (with the old diploma degree). Due to some personal developments, I have decided to teach at  Haupt- and Realschule (some kind of high schools). Unfortunately this means back to university for me to study some additional Chemistry, Pedagogics and Didactics.

I did stumble over Panda's Thumb, when I looked for sources about the Evolution-Creationism debate in the States, as this topic gets increasingly important over here.

I am most interested on the ways the Creationists try to sneak Creationism into class rooms. There is some cooperation between fundamentalist Christian groups in Germany and the States and thus I believe that Creationists over here will use similar methods like they already do in the United States.

Additionally, I am interested in resources for teaching evolution in school. The schools I will teach in will have a large amount of students from the lower strata of society. Creationist ideas will be more predominat there than at the Gymnasium, which are more some kind of upperclass schools.

Although not quite the "lurker" as I do jump in from time to time. I don't have the educated scientific background most of the regular have. I was, however, motivated to purchase a Bio 101 book to refresh my basics and have gone on to read many of the books and papers referenced by the regulars.  For that, I thank you.

Keep up the snark....I LOVE THAT!
