Here are my two babies:

funk and disco, baby, funk and disco.

I picked up the Tele because she's a one off, from when the custom shop was only building 4 guitars a week. I haven't seen a Moto that predates her. Sadly she was in some pretty heavy country circles before I freed her.

I'll add pix of my guitars when I figure out how to use my camera and upload the pix to this site.  My first is an Eko hollow-body electric from 1968ish that my dad gave to me when I was 13 years old.

I can't play much anymore because of my neck, so my babies collect a lot of dust, but I can't bear to part with them.

Sorry 'bout forgetting to set the date on the camera.  I do that a lot.

Well I used to have a beautiful old 1930s Danemann grand piano - all 6 feet 8 inches of it. I had to sell it when I moved to London so now I play a Yamaha P250 which is about the best impression of a real piano that a reasonably portable keyboard can make.

And soon I'm going to take the plunge and spend £3,000 or more on a proper cello, since I'm so tired of my old one, which I've had for 22 years and which outlived its usefulness a long time ago.

No guitars though I'm afraid. As a classical musician I think I might be in a bit of a minority on this thread...

I do play classical guitar, limited to Baroque and Renaissance. I got into it from the finger-pickin' school of counterpoint. I sang in too many early music groups in the 80's, a glorious era we shall not see again. And I found out afdave is a keyboard maven, accompanying choir on piano. Rats. I was ready to believe he had no music in his body. Are there no sax players, harpists, ondes-Martelotists or ondiolinists on theis group? No adepts of the tromba marina? No one who can do a figured bass or continuo on the didgeridoo? I could bring in a cute punk-rock tuba player.

And FTK is just not going to put up with your F%^ing potty mouth!  Why, the very idea of posting and bragging about your "pickup routing" , your "truss-rod",  your "peghead" and your "Knob Tuners"!

But seriously, she looks like a sweet machine, and I would love to finger her.

[shakes head vigorously to get out of character.]

A bit more seriously, however, my daughter just bought herself her first electric guitar 4 days ago. Imagine my shock when I discovered yesterday that her guitar looks identical to the guitar used in this video.

I'm now telling her that if she wants me to buy her a new amp, she has to be able to play 'Voodoo Child'.  :p

Richard, that Strat is a Jimi Hendrix sig model, no?

And the Tele rocks but it is calling for a pearloid pick guard and pearloid tuners (like my beater tele has).  Oh, and it told me it misses playing country music :-)

ps: Do you and Michael Dell hang out?

The Strat is a limited edition master-built proto strat:

http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=1519001841

The Tele is a one off custom shop MOTO tele, from 95, back when the custom shop made 4 guitars a week. They can't make them (MOTO's) any more for environmental reasons.

Arden has a HOMO tele.

I don't don't know Micheal Dell, but am familiar with his piece-of-shit computers.

I received this Charvel/Jackson electric bass guitar for my birthday in 2005:

It's a hand-me-down, but in good shape. All I know is that one of the knobs is tone and the other volume, and where to put the cable. I bought an electronic chromatic tuner since I'm hopeless at the sort of fine matching of pitch that folks who use pitch pipes are so good at. What I do with this is therapy, not music, at least so far. IDC advocates seeking to have me dissipate my time in harmless activities could pitch in to buy me lessons. Well, harmless at least until I publish my first album, "IDC Gives Me the Anti-Science Blues".

It takes time to get your ear tuned, Wes. Starting with an electronic tuner is a good idea. If you get used to *being* in tune, you'll quickly hear when you're not.

I know Steve Story wants to form a band doing cake covers.

Or I have some great ID lyrics:

Quote
Refrain:
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flow’r that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountains,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one.
The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water,
To gather every day.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

Cecil F. Alexander

My EF is off the chart with that one.

I have a plugin to Winamp which saves songs streamed over internet radio. I used to set it up, go to school, and come home to 8 hours of songs freshly downloaded. Did that for months. I have a folder of like 30 gigs of songs most of which I've never listened to. Problem was, this one radio station I recorded, Radio Paradise, the guy would play a couple of cake songs every day. I couldn't stand that. So I actually wrote a little script, NoCake.bat, which runs once a day and deletes any file from that folder with 'cake' in the title, and then notes it in a log file.

Heck, all you gotta do is let your hair grow long, learn three chords that you play in random order, and turn the distortion up REALLY REALLY far, and you could play for any heavy metal band.

Ultimately stimulated by deadman's posting up of a Garrison electric acoustic, some test-playing of a cheaper Garrison at American Music here in Seattle, some further discussion with my guitar-playing and instrument-building second cousin in the Atlanta area (a big Richard Thompson fan), and some further research--

--and resisting the temptation to go out and blow my entire tax refund on a vintage Martin, which would be way more guitar than my abilities warrant, though darn frickin' tempting!--

I today plunked my hard-earned cash down for this little baby, fresh from the Garrison works in O Canada:

I considered a more expensive model with rosewood, but I found I liked the sound, action, and look of this one better.

Here's the specs on my Garrison G20 acoustic:

body style: dreadnaught
top: solid western red cedar - satin finish
back & sides: solid canadian birch - satin finish
neck: solid mahogany
fingerboard: solid rosewood
bridge: solid rosewood
nut & saddle: TUSQ
rosette: herringbone pattern wood inlay
inlays: mother of pearl dots
tuners: Garrison individual chrome-plated
strings: D'Addario lights, extended play
warranty: Limited Lifetime - 5 year transferable
intonation: Buzz Feiten Tuning System
nut width: 1.7 inches
scale length: 25.4 inches

I love it so!

My axes

1998 Landola Jumbo dreadnought with curly maple back and sides (teh SEXXXXXI_HAWT) will post pics when I return to her

2004 Goldtone Banjo, heavier than hell.  An old man in Bryson City NC once told me if a banjo don't weigh 19.3 lbs, it ain't worth shit.  I reckon he's right, hell I don't know.  I like this one.

1982 Gibson Epiphone Mandolin, don't know the model.  pretty good little bug, swapped a half pound of ginseng and 100 bucks for it.

ca 1850 fiddle, no label, very sweet low tones and screaming high.  wish i could play it as good as it sounds.  My good friend Roger Howell (Madison County, NC, look him up!!! Master old-time fiddler and keeper of the tradition in those parts) fixed it up from where it had been broken before, came in an old timey coffin case.  Bow is 150 years old too.

ca 1950 John Juzek fiddle, it's OK.  needs to be fixed up before I can determine if it is worth a damn, those years are hyper variable but this one shows a little promise in the grain of the wood on top.  I swapped a blowed up Ford Bronco to my dad's cousin for that, he got the truck up and running for 30 bucks and I am stuck with one more fiddle (wife loooooved that one).  Ive got four extra bows that go with it, if any of you know anything about fiddle bows PM me and I'll send you some pics.  They could be valuable, hell I don't know.

2003 Crimona stand up bass, pretty good bass for the money.  and even a shitty bass makes it sound that much better anyway.

When the shit hits the fan, what are all you electric ladyland boys going to do for fun?  No power, no noise?  Long Live the Neo Luddite Revolution.

Rich pointed me here, so I guess I'll resurrect this thread...

The guitar on my blog was a $200 Epi SG. For the money, it was one hell of a guitar, but unfortunatly I had to sell it a few months ago when I needed the money for other things (Standard Issue Broke Uni Student).

Now I'm eagerly awaiting my tax returns and pondering a replacement. I'd like to go higher end this time - something that'll last a while and look damn good doing it.

This has caught my eye at the moment:

Could use better pickups from what I've read, but electronics is one of my many hobbies, and I can replace pickups without much trouble.

Hell, I've never even used non-shitty pickups, so its not like I'll be in agony anyway. ;)

(Amusing fact - the one post on my blog about the SG draws in more visitors than anything else - I seem to be popular on google)

Synthesizers, drum machines, analog delays and a rudimentary laptop studio are my weapons of choice. Oh, and a Gibson SG.

Do you like ableton live? I tried out the demo but kept finding myself cross-fading away pops and crackles all the time. These days I just slave the MIDI gear to cubase, the CV gear to the MIDI gear and use the DAW as an expensive tape deck.

I thought more about non-zero loop crossings. Say you have a 4-bar loop where the end doesn't match up with the start, resulting in a clear "pop" when looped.

Something like this, ASCII art style.

  *    **      *
*** ****   **
********* **** <-- non-zero loop ending resulting in a pop.
<---- loop ---->

If you chop it clean to the bar / transients you don't get a clean loop when repeating? Is this why you're cross-fading?

Yeah. I do the same thing in cubase, but the effect is far less noticeable, basically making sure that both the start and end of the loop ends at zero, with a slight fadeout at the end and slight fadein at the start.

That was my only gripe with Live though.

No jazz between that? My my, a friend of mine showed me this jazz guitarist, Bill Frisell. Wish I had guitar skills like that, I already fail at Guitar Hero... And it's not even Dragonforce-ish guitar skills, this totally different, amazing.

Agreed about the acid jazz, I'm a huge bebop fan myself. And to keep this a bit more ontopic, there is 1 song in partical from Sonny Rollins (although I should have to look up the title) wich has a great (I think) guitar solo in it.
Edit: it's Without a song although I don't really like this version.

I have that track on this album. Not as swanky as owning the 78, but they did an excellent mastering job, given that the record is 86 years old.

Such a primeval song, sends chills down my spine when I'm in the right mood.

Some of it is okay. There's a fine line between 'cool' and 'up its own arse' and it staggers across it  frequently. Plus some of them chords are real finger-stingers!

But, of course, I would be delighted to use some of your work.

Agreed. I have this CD of him and it's splendid. He's also really good with old guitar styles.

i got to hang out with him a few hours at an Old Time Music Week thing I worked at a few years ago.  I dont understand how those guys get two or three strings droning so clear while still playing a melody.  you can't even hear the bow changing direction.

my fiddling sounds like the hammonds family compared to that.

If you are ever down here in Sooner Country, a trip to Guthrie to visit Byron Berline is highly recommended.  He and his band play one or two shows a month in a small room above the fiddle shop and they are alot of fun.

Interesting Trivia for Arden and Albie:  The guitar player's name is Jim Fish, and he used be the curator of birds at the Oklahoma City Zoo and, for a while, was at the National Aviary in Pittsurgh.

On the subject of funk, this is the best live concert footage of James Brown anywhere, which puts it on the short list of best live concert footage of anyone anywhere.

In the CD of this concert, the sound quality is vastly better. Catfish Collins' guitar solo is jaw dropping.

Different direction: Last night my kid rented and we watched Across the Universe, which is a wonderful exploration of the '60s built around covers of Beatles songs.

Really great stuff, and many of the covers underscore what brilliant song writers Lennon, McCartney and Harrison could be. Even heretofore corny stuff like "I want to hold your hand" is suddenly exceptionally passionate and beautiful.

Brought tears to my eyes.

It's gratifying that my 18 year old kid thoroughly appreciates the Beatles.

On the same page of youtube there's a pitifully short 'Cotton Eyed Joe' with Bruce singing: there's one moment where his raspy voice sounds like one of the strings. Can't tell the tuning, but it fit his voice gorgeously. Sent shivers up my spine.

Trying to bring it all together - some funk, live, from Abbey Road..

things to look for:
Dances like Chatterbox
Ostinato baseline.
The cheeky slide into into C11
Soaring strings...
Horns punctuating the piece.

OMFG. If James Hetfield ever decides to pack it in, that guy just has to be the new Metallica lead singer.  Not only has Master of Puppets never sounded better, but I suspect this guy could still probably kick Lar's ass and keep him in line.

I'm not allowed to buy new axes until after my renovation -which is a shame as a nice 'Old Hickory' Les Paul was on eBay a while back.

Susan Boyle stunned me. Amazing!

Incidently, my new album comes out in Japan on Wednesday 21st, in Europe on April 29th and 30th, and in the US on May 19th.

Some guy already put the whole promo album on youtube, if anyone wants to take a listen...

Just search "score to a new beginning". There's even a playlist...

All right, let's see if the collective power of the AtBC ax-trust can help out here.

Here's an old favorite song of mine, but it's also old and obscure enough that I haven't been able to locate guitar chords on the InterTubes.

It's "Don't Cry, My Lady Love," written and sung by Dino Valente (the songwriter, under a psuedonym, of "Get Together," the Youngbloods' hit) when he was a member of one of the later line-ups of Quicksilver Messenger Service.

It's a spritely piano waltz, with a little twang in the vocals, but I'm looking for guitar chords, naturally.  I doubt they are very complicated, but I'm still not very good at trying to pick them out myself...

Here's links to two YouTube "videos" (the video stream is just a still band photo or album cover shot):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQhHSwj2ALA&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayEEcK---b8&feature=related

I've got lyrics, if that might help in listening to the thing multiple times!

If anyone wants the lyrics, or can whip off the chording in an idle moment, let me know here, and we can do a PM thing.

Thanks so much, fellow six-string wranglers!

Glad to help keep this thread going, but -- wah! -- wuddabout my chords?

Really, it's a pretty little lilting broken-hearted love song.  Give it a listen and if you don't like, certainly I wouldn't expect anyone to labor over the chords...  But if someone DUZ LIKE, then I'd be exceptionally, eternally, nay, virtually grateful if they'd figger out the chord changes and pass them along.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Stevie!

Ok, I'll get to it tomorrow and give you the basics.

EDIT: if you already have the starting chord, I can figure it out right now. Else I'll have to go and get my guitar or keyboard in the attic...

perfect relative. But I couldn't sort out a A from a B. if you just pop a note to me without a reference...

BTW, it is done. Just work out the final structure, but it's not so hard:

(intro): C# minor, B minor

Verse: A major, F# minor, A major, B Minor, C# minor

Bridge: D major, B minor, C# minor, A major, B minor, A major, B minor, C# major, A major, B minor

Chorus (I suppose): D major, E major, A major, F# minor, B minor, C# minor, A major, B minor, C # major

Finish: A major

Just a quick tip to Stevie:

If you want to play it for funsies, without the track in the background, just transpose every thing by 3 semi-tones up (verse should then start in C major). It will be a lot easier to play, as it will mainly adress the basic chords with only a few bar-chords.

Just sayin' :)

EDIT: Damn and blast! I just realised this sounds oh so condescending! Forget that last post...

First, thanks a bunch!  I REALLY appreciate it!

Second, it's impossible to condescend to a pinhead.

I do want to play it in the "original" register, and -- despite my utter helplessness at this point in my, heh, "career" at figuring it out for myself -- none of the chords will be a problem to play.

Well, none any more than any other, that is!

If you or anyone else stumbles across refinements, though, please let me know...

I just knew that AtBC was the place to come for this!  Coolness!

"The Golden State" Stratocaster was specially built for California Governor Pete Wilson by master luthier George Amicay with the assistance of Jason Davis at the Fender Custom Shop in early Fall 1998. Unique, the bass side features a gorgeous, finely rendered five inch diameter carving of The Great Seal of the State of California overlaid with gold leaf paint. This handwork, quite labor-intensive, took Amicay 200 hours to complete and is signed "G. Amicay '98." On the treble side are the signatures of former California governors, Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian carved in facsimile, and adjacent to the Great Seal is the carved facsimile signature of Dan Lungren, California's Attorney General under Wilson who ran for but lost the 1998 governor's race. What had been planned as very special congratulatory gift from Wilson to Lundgren became, instead, a heartfelt token of consolation.

I didn't say he wasn't good.  Anyone who can capture the essence of SRV is okay by me. It was more the video that tickled my funny bone.

PS: Apocalyptica?  I guess I better look them up again.  I thought they were just 4 cellos.

PM me please.  Thanks in advance.

I was thinking that heddle should post his kid's video on this thread for posterity.

My kid plays the cello, and he turned me on to this band called Apocalytica.  They play classical/rock/metal.  Kinda unique.

Careful FTK, Apocalyptica is a (not so typical but still) metal band.

The music of teh Devil!!!

Besides that, I hope you enjoy them, I saw them twice in concert, and it's incredible how much energy they deliver on stage with classical instruments.

And I agree that dheddle should post his son's videos here for all to enjoy...

I would love to take my kid to one of their concerts...he loves playing the cello, and I think it would inspire him all the more.  Not sure if they ever tour in the US?  I'll have to look into that.

I like Apocalyptica, but it just isn't the same without the well-loved Hetfield "Yeah!" mixed in.

Linky for context

I know there are more than a few here at AtBC that fondle the guitar with much delight. I don't know how many are acoustic finger pickers.

I am...and I just learned of the recent passing of one of my main idols.

The world has lost a guitar genius without parallel.

I was privileged enough to attend a guitar camp he headlined, spending 2 2-hour private sessions learning from him. Oh...and share a bottle of "fantastic" Glenmorangie Highland over dinner after meeting back up with him at Denver concert years later.

John Renbourn - NY Times

John Renbourn - The Gaurdian

John and Bert were the guitarists I wanted to be. I would also thank them for introducing me to the music of Mingus and Monk.

I never checked this thread, on account of it didn't occur to me that "Muso" could be "music" misspelled…

I don't play guitar, or bass, or any stringed instrument, really. I'm okay on keyboards, but I prefer vocals, which I'm awfully damn good at, if I do say so myself; I'm in the baritone section of Schola Cantorum, and I was in a band which never really went anywhere. I was fairly active in filking several years ago, but fafiated due to financial issues.

Does anybody care if I post photos of my (non-guitar) instruments?

My instruments!

This one is Yamaha's SHS-10. Classic keytar, introduced to the market in 1987; I picked this one up on eBay a few months back. The ones that showed up in the US were red; Yamaha also made them in grey (like this one) and black models, the color of the case being the only difference between them all. DEVO may have been the most prominent SHS-10 users.

It's got 25 built-in voices, plus 25 built-in automatic percussion/accompaniment styles. No provision for modifying the voices. No MIDI in, but does have MIDI out on channels 1 thru 16. Built-in speaker so's you can play the thing without an external amp. Can run on six AA-cell batteries; with an external AC adapter, can run on house current.

This beast is another keytar, specifically Roland's Lucina AX-09. 150 built-in voices. Some minor voice-mod capabilities, but the user interface for said functions is (as you might surmise from the photo) highly awkward and inconvenient, so I haven't bothered with customizing any of the sounds. Fortunately, all the built-in voices are pretty damn good (albeit some are special-purpose sounds with a rather limited range of utility), so customizing said voices is more of a gee-it'd-be-nice thing than a practical necessity. Alas, the Lucina has no on-board speakers; one must plug into an external amplifier if one wishes to hear the thing.

On-board memory lets you store 12 voices, any of which you can recall with a two-button command; it also has a USB port, which lets you make a USB connection to a computer (control a software synth with the AX-09's keyboard, record/play music from a software sequencer), or plug in a USB thumb drive to make a backup copy of everything. Runs on eight AA-cell batteries (the manual specifies that they gotta be rechargeable NiMH batteries), or on house current via AC adapter. Mucho MIDI features, both -in and -out.

What's a 'tubon'?

[googling]

Ah… that's a tubon. Nice toy, but I'd rather not be stuck with 1966-vintage electronic voices. Hmm… maybe use current tech to build something with the same form factor…

And one more instrument, that I took a crap picture of the first time and just got around to re-taking!

It's a melodica, aka melodion. If you think of it as a harmonica with a keyboard, you'll be pretty close; that jobbie sticking off to the left is the mouthpiece into which you blow air, and each key is hooked up to obstruct or allow airflow past its own dedicated metal reed. Yes, I fully realize that "metal reed" is a weird phrase, but them's the breaks. In addition to the standard mouthpiece, it also came with a hose long enough that you can hold the thing in a position that lets you see the keyboard properly whilst playing it:

It's the Performer37 model from Hohner (see also: "harmonica with a keyboard"). 37 keys yields a range of a touch more than three octaves; I'd kinda like to have a melodica with a wider range than that, but the only ones I've been able to find out about on the net are 44-key models that cost an order of magnitude more than my Hohner did. Sorry, guys, but I ain't got that much money to throw around!

Am pleasantly surprised to discover the number of AtBC regulars who are musically inclined. Depending on physical locations, it might be nice to try to get together for a jam session or something. Myself, I'm in San Jose, California; anybody else in the Bay Area? Specific details of your location need not be mentioned in the forum, that's what PM and/or email is for.
