The UK is being blessed with a visit from this US genius (claims to be a life member of MENSA) over the next few days:

http://www.jcchurch.org.uk/index.php?id=379

Quote
Dr Grady McMurtry grew up on Berkley UC campus as the son of a Professor. By the age of eight, Grady was so knowledgeable about fossils and dinosaurs that he taught evolution to fellow students for the next six years. After gaining an honours degree in science, Grady taught evolution-science and maths at High School level and in the New York State University. At the age of 27 Grady became a Christian and spent 18 months re-examining his understanding of origins.

To quote Grady – “I compared the science that supports evolution, and the science that supports creation and critically determined that there is no science to support evolution.”

He now lectures in 20 languages on five continents

DON’T MISS THIS CHANCE TO HEAR HIM SPEAK

Listening to him on a UK Christian TV station he claims, among other things that:

Millions/billions of years was invented by French atheists in the 17th century and later on suported by British atheists such as Darwin, Lyell, Hutton etc.

Radiometric dating has no scientific basis, does not work, and was invented by scientists in order to support millions/billions of years.

The geological column does not exist anywhere in the world.

Evolution is  religion/philosophy. Scientists realise this.

The idea that flat earthism was prevalent before Columbus was an idea invented by Washington Irving. Apparently the prevailng view before that time was of a round Earth. Irving rewrote history.

Here's his website:

http://www.creationworldview.org/

and some articles/sermons:

http://www.creationworldview.org/articles.asp

I apologise if some on this forum find this offensive:

http://www.creationworldview.org/articles_view.asp?id=53

This is the first I've come across McMurtry (he claims to be Scottish although he speaks with an American accent). His ideas seem to be even wakier than Hovind's.

Unlike Hovind though, he does appear to have genuine qualifications and was something of a child prodigy apparently. Who am I to argue with such a talented individual.

He's (partly) right about one thing. Flat Earthism wasn't the prevailing view during the time of Columbus, and was dismissed as a serious theory thousands of years ago, only to be resurrected by some nutjobs a couple of hundred years ago.

Otherwise he's talking a whole load of old rubbish.

Seconded and thirded: never argue with a drunk or fundy.

In any case, who are you trying to persuade? Our hero isn't going to roll over on his livelihood or core convictions, and your audience is only there to have their Bible buttons pushed. As I've said before, the only way into their heads will be to show that your opponent is breaching one of their basic principles, e.g. by spouting heresy, or lying, or such like.

As usual, he has none of the relevant education.  But he is a pastor, so we know he's a paid liar (no, I'm not saying all pastors are liars, we know he's one by the usual criteria):

Offensive? Au contraire mon frère.

This natural born super genius writes about genetics:

Quote
Evolutionists say that biological life forms change in an “upward” direction, becoming more and more complex, through spontaneous mutation of genetic information. However, the word mutation means by definition “copying error.” A mutation is a structural change in the hereditary material which makes the offspring different from the parents. Mutations are errors in copying the genetic codes.

You may copy something perfectly or imperfectly, but you cannot copy something more perfectly. If we copy something perfectly, then there is no change from one generation to the next. If we copy something imperfectly, then the information is degraded or corrupted and the next generation will suffer from the imperfections of the copying processes.

Isn't that just right? Of course, any change is an imperfection, and the imperfect will suffer righteously in hell!

"Son of a professor." Geez, that's pathetic.

I would double-check his other biographical claims if I were you.

I take it this isn't the Grady McMurtry who was a student of Aleister Crowley. :)

However, if you had served us this one:

The Big Bang; the Age of the Universe; and Red Shift

I would have had to kill you

Here we read:

Quote
Here we go again! The astronomers who believe in evolution have attempted to better "define" the age of the universe and the rate of expansion of the "Expanding Universe", a presumed event based upon a belief in one of the various Big Bang theories.

Except that it's the other way around. The universe was thought to be fairly static, when Hubble discovered the redshift af distant galaxies, which in turn made the Roman Catholic Priest Georges Lemaître come up with the Big Bang theory.

But then again, what do you expect from a creationist?

I read the 'offensive' one as far as 'even ardent evolutionist Stephen J Gould and Niles Eldridge admit that there are no transitional fossils in the fossil record!  None!!!'

then i had to stop.  if just plain lying is offensive then I need to find a new shtick.  I was thinking I could be WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY more offensive than that.

But prevarication is the new offense, it seems.

Isn't it sad how the genius sons of professors was-teaching-evolution-at-age-eight-before-I-even-started-to-rate's never go down in history. Or have good web designers. Or logic. Or a clear grasp of what evolution is. Ah, cruel world. :p

"Genius" my ass. The local fish-wrapping that calls itself a newspaper had the "woman with the highest IQ in the world" with her own column for a while. She took questions from the audience. What a twit! That did not last long, either. :D

You mean Marilyn vos Savant? She still does that - in her weekly column in Parade (the Sunday 'magazine' that comes with most big city newspapers).

Kind of an odd shtick for the 'woman with the highest IQ in the world.'

If you believe IQ has a normal distribution and an SD of 15, mean 100, and her IQ is 225ish, then you wouldn't expect to see her so soon in the earths history with the current population. Bizarrely, we might use EF type logic.

Yeah rich you are so so so so so so not gay.

Marilyn is hot perhaps that gives her like 175 IQ points.  That is also why FtK is so dumb and stuff.  Double whammy.

I'm just regretting that this fool went to good old Rocky Top.  Why is it the ag campus kids that are always the frikkin evolution deniers?  Don't they teach soul soil science over there (that should shut folks up about the flood if anything will).

This guy is full of shit.

1.  'Life Membership' in MENSA isnt an award.  It means you paid $X, so you dont have to renew every year.

2.  Back in the day, like, when this guy would have joined, you could get into MENSA just by getting a 30 on the ACT.

3.  You dont have to be a genius to join MENSA.  Geniuses dont join MENSA.  MENSA is for the wannabes and losers like this guy. This is where the real homies roll.

4.  IQ tests are bullshit.  Example A) Dave Scott.

Edited, because only people with IQs in the 99.999999 percentile can edit.

But remember, DaveScot extrapolated his IQ from his SAT score.  It's not from the Stanford-Binet. And he wrote his SAT not as a 17 yo while still in high school but as a 21 yo after a stint in the USMC.  I'm thinking that perhaps some of the training he received in the Corps just might have given him an advantage when it came to taking the test.

Edited because I can too!

Many moons ago, when I was 16 and insecure, I joined MENSA because I thought it was a really good thing to put on a CV and would help with uni applications later on etc. I was quite pleased with my test scores, paid my membership fee and then promptly stuck the membership on my CV.

A few months later I realised that I was paying an organisation to tell me that I was very intelligent. Thus the organisation must be more intelligent than I was. I didn't need an organisation to tell me I was intelligent, I was sufficiently intelligent to have worked this out for myself, and paying them to tell me this actually made me very, very stupid indeed. I cancelled my membership, removed it from my CV and never bothered to join up again.

Ahhhh childhood innocence and vanity!

Has Mensa ever rejected a membership application? Given that their main saleable commodity is support for those with self-esteem issues, you'd have to be sceptical.

But in case there exists a group of such people, I propose a new association for those who didn't quite make it but who whose lives would be enriched by celebration of their  aspiration to mediocrity.

As 'Mensa' can mean either 'mind' or 'table' in Latin, the new group of those who don't quite make it all the way up could be called 'Sedecula'. That means 'stool', which has another equally appropriate meaning.

For fearless defence of ignorance in the face of ridicule, Honourary Life Presidency to DaveScrot, but who else belongs?

Names and full citations please.

They rejected a friend of mine at the same time I applied but I have no evidence on hand to back that up, so sadly it is relegated to mere anecdote.

Point taken though, MENSA membership has a certain ego massaging quality to it. Another reason I discontinued my membership. I don't need to pay to have my ego massaged! Take THAT how you will. ;-)

On a related note, vos Savant's claimed uber-high IQ is from a bizarre test that was normed badly and used a ratio IQ instead of a far saner standard deviation. Even among IQ tests, it's a bullshit score. "Smart" people get awfully dumb when you start telling them good things about themselves.

Hawking has the right of it! IQ tests are hilarious, they test (effectively) your ability to do IQ tests! Woohoo! I hope people realise that my above two posts, whilst true, are mocking my younger self for being such a vain and gullible pratt, not bragging about said younger self's IQ.

People in general get awfully dumb when you tell them good things about themselves. It's how people sell things. Smart people are not immune. Or even "smart" people. One might consider the a significant part of the appeal of certain forms of religion and creationism to be just such a sales pitch: "Hey, I like the idea that the creator of the universe made me especially, it must be true!".

Incidentally, there is a creationist talking at next month's Skeptics in the Pub in London if any UKians are interested. It should be a larf (returning to Peter's topic of "debating" creationists). Rotten fruit sellers the nation over have gone out of stock in anticiption. It might be something of a bloodbath, it might not.

So, on a serious and related note, any tips from the professional creationist debaters as to how to question/pin down this chap?

Here are the event details.

"Paul Taylor joined the staff of AiG (UK/Europe) in August 2005 as a writer and speaker... After becoming a Christian in his late teens Paul had a Saturday job in a Christian bookshop in Ashton. It was there that he first noticed a booklet by a group of Christians who did not believe in the theory of evolution! This was a complete shock to Paul, because he could not conceive how people could fail to believe in what he thought was established scientific fact. However, the bookshop manager persuaded him that it made scientific sense to believe the Bible's account of creation in Genesis, and sent Paul home with such books as Evolution or Creation by Professor Enoch,  The Genesis Flood by John Whitcomb and Henry Morris, and Morris'  The Genesis Record."

Good grief.

Once the Evil Atheist Conspiracy takes control, we can burn people like this at the stake.

I've met "geniuses" that couldn't break their way out a wet paper bag and "simple" folks that were self reliant, able to think on their feet and solve problems as they presented themselves. A high IQ alone doesn't do much if you weren't also give the common sense the FSM gives a turnip. Book "larnin" and test taking are just one form of intelligence.

I'll differ a little on the value of the major IQ measures (e.g. the WAIS-III). Used appropriately with good training and full awareness of the limitations inherent in any sampling and norming exercise (reliability, validity, cultural limitations, etc.) they provide useful inferences.

There are no general instruments that measure much above about 150 in adults and even special purpose, highly verbal instruments with higher ceilings (like the Miller Analogies Test, GRE subtests etc.) don't go much higher. So IQs above 160 or so are almost always guestimations. This is well below the level of genius. Ironically, the only exception to this is the use of otherwise obsolete ratio IQ instruments with children. I think we would all agree that a child of 8 performing tasks that are difficult for a 16 year old is a remarkable child.

I don't doubt for a moment that DaveScot does have a relatively high IQ, I'd say at least 130, based upon his articulate writing style, word usage, etc., as well as his former profession. What he demonstrates is that there are other factors that determine the quality of one's thinking in a given area, not the least of which is genuine scholarly/scientific education and training (not the autodactyl knob polishing he boasts about) and personality. And that he is lacking in both regards.

Dammit Bill! Trust you to go and say something serious and insightful when I was being flippant and inaccurate.

I'll have to go ahead and agree with you now, but I promise I won't enjoy it.

So there.

Louis

P.S. I thought "genius" IQ was about 145 or was that the minimum pass mark for MENSA all them years ago? I can't remember. I do remember the bit about the upper limits of IQ measurement.....well vaguely. ;-) Ah well it shows I care about the issue, well, sort of.

Is you insinuating by that use of an obscure colloquialism that I was somehow "special"?

If so: fuck off!

If not: fuck off!

If anything else: fuck off!

There we go! All bases covered.

P.S. You know it's witty when it contains the words "fuck off". I read that in a book. "Spot and the Art of Profane Witticisms" IIRC.

P.P.S. Anyway, when I was at school I was an automaticscrewdriver with a QI of somewhere westsouthwesterly of 360 degrees. Chopped liver is very tasty if you marinade it overnight in soy sauce, wine vinegar, demerara sugar and (most importantly) root ginger.  Fry it gently, add a little flour as thickening, add the marinade to some beef stock and serve on a bed of tagliatelle.

Yummy.

That is SO off topic and I apologize.

So - are going to hear this chap or not?

I think Mensa's cutoff is at the top 2%, which is sometimes only a bit north of 130 IQ but moves around depending upon the specific test.

IQ tests aren't really useless, but they've got a really high margin of error that only gets worse the more specialized they are. This wouldn't be a problem if many people didn't think "IQ" always signified something specific.

As the Presidential campaign of Mike Huckabee winds down, many creationists will be out of work, thus leaving the ALL CAPS THEY USE IN POSTING ABOUT DARWINISTS more readily available and accessible.

If you can hold out just a little longer, you should be ok.

You might also be able to borrow some ALL CAPS from some of the other ATBCers in GB, maybe get some from the upcoming London meet?

Hey, can anybody help a brother?

4.  IQ tests are bullshit.  Example A) Dave Scott.

P.S. I thought "genius" IQ was about 145 or was that the minimum pass mark for MENSA all them years ago? I can't remember. I do remember the bit about the upper limits of IQ measurement.....well vaguely. ;-) Ah well it shows I care about the issue, well, sort of.

The highest IQ obtainable on the WAIS-III, which is by far the most used instrument for professional measure of IQ is 155.

Mensa is a 2-sigma club, indicating that an IQ => greater than 130 gets you in. That's the top 2%, or 1 in 50. Clearly 1 in 50 are not geniuses.  Nor does 145 qualify one as a genius. I'd be thinking something like 160 to 185 as a threshold, where real qualitative differences are apparent. Additionally, genius tends to be somewhat domain specific (ie. musical genius, mathematical genius, etc.) rather than domain general.

When it was a creationist I was making a special effort to attend, sadly I'm not now it isn't! I know, I know, I'm a bad boy. I'm going to have to stick a LOT of rotten fruit in the freezer for when he does make an appearance.

For any of you Londoners out there, SitP is a cracking night out and the guys and girls who organise it/are regulars at it are a very decent bunch. There is also drinking. Yay! I can't make it as often as I like anymore due to work pressures, but I try to go as often as possible.

I think in the near future SitP will be going from strength to strength, call it insider information.

Unfortunately the evening with Paul Taylor has been potsponed until a later date Louis. I was looking forward to a report from George Jellis over at BCSE. It would have been interesting to see how Taylor handled himself in a hostile environment. If you want to see Taylor in action have a look at my links to his talks from Lisburn in an earlier thread

Still, I suppose I'll have the opportunity to see him (Taylor) very soon. Obviously encouraged by the crowds on his first visit to the province, he's decided to return for a few days next month:
