I'm not well read in this but I'd like some of the philosopher types to give their two-penneth. First person to quote Douglass Adams has to go and sit in Uncommon Descent for a day.

My monkey musings:

(1) It is actual a category error. What is the meaning of Rocks? What is the colour of wednesday

(2) meaning is subjective and co-produced by the observing entity. Therefore one size does not fit all.

(3) We have an inherent 'emptiness'. It drives us to look... blah blah reproductive advantage!

VMartin is bemused by my attraction to surrealism. What he doesn't realize is, surrealism is one philosophy (it started out as a philosophy until Dali came to America) that embraces and celebrates blind chance as a means that frees us from a dull, predictable existence filled with rules and routine. Yeah, ask me what I "believe":

The disciples of light never invented anything but
not very heavy darkness.
The river rolls the body of a little woman and that means
the end is near.
The widow in a wedding gown gets into the wrong procession
we'll all arrive late at the grave.
A ship of flesh is swallowed by the sand of a little beach.
The helmsman invites the passengers to be quiet.
The waves wait impatiently. Nearer, my God, to Thee!
The helmsman invites the waves to speak. They do.
Night seals its bottle with stars and makes a fortune
in the export trade.
Huge stores are built to sell nightingales.
But they can't satisfy the desires of
the Queen of Siberia who wants a white one.
An English commodore swears he'll never again be caught
picking sage at night between the feel of salt statues.
Apropos of this a little Cerebos salt-shaker gets up
with difficulty on its delicate legs. It pours
what's left of my life on my plate.
Enough to salt the Pacific Ocean.
Put a lifebuoy on my grave.
Because you never know.

--Robert Desnos
atheist in a foxhole and surrealist poet
translated by Carolyn Forche :)

And there you have it, but it doesn't exist. ;)

Allow me to once again quote from the Greatest Story Ever Told, by Monty Python.  (Coincidently enough, from their movie called The Meaning Of Life)

"The world is a beautiful place. You must try and make everyone happy, and bring peace and content with you everywhere you go. And so I became a waiter... well, it's not much of a philosophy I know, but well... fuck you, I can live my own life in my own way if I want to – fuck off."

My personal addition to this would be:

None of us asked to be here, so let's all do what it takes to make our lives easier and more fun in the time we have.

Corallary 1 - The key to happiness is to ignore priests, preachers, imams and all that claim to have a direct line to, or the ear of, any sky god or god(s) that have the right to tell me and you what to do.

Corallary 2:  It's really a lot of fun to have an edit button.  Don't go through life without one.

"Category error" says it all.

It is a bit intriguing that "to mean" may connote both "to signify" and "to intend" (as in "I meant to do that.") These usages are linked, but the second makes the category error more clear: life wasn't "intended," because agency is required for intention and there is no "agency" behind the origination of life and its subsequent almost infinite ramification, particularly that portion that ramified to become us. Life was neither intended nor unintended (or intentional or accidental, as Jack Krebs and I earlier discussed on the Irascible Kansans thread), and life neither has meaning nor has no meaning.

In connection with this, it is important to emphasize that "life has no meaning" also commits the same category error.

I'm down with category error.

Well, all three are kinda-sorta true.

First off, logically, it's a category error. Go logic.

Second and third are basically the same thing to me and both true for adaptive and personal values of true, which is like truth except not really.

Many moons ago, when I was in my nonage and liberally inebriated, some friends and I decided that the meaning of life was: beer, pizza, boobies.

We weren't sure about the order.

Louis

P.S. Seriously, I agree with the OP, the question is a category error, no matter how heartfelt it can be.

No authorship attributed on the copy I nicked, but I've always liked this:

Meaning must originate in a mind.  Since the Universe is mindless and the Cosmos does not care, you must care, if you wish to have purpose.  Individuals are free to choose, within the limits of humanistic morality.  Find meaning human compassion, social progress, the beauty of humanity (art, music, literature), personal happiness, plesaure, joy, love, or the advancement of knowledge and your life will have true purpose.

Sadly, it conflates "meaning" and "purpose", which is pernicious.
It makes some over-broad, and ultimately indefensible, statements (and others that are defensible, but are not herein defended).
But it still speaks to me.

hugs,
Shirley Knott

But, but, but our disagreements over the priority was directly responsible for a series of in depth investigations.....

Louis

P.S. One particular investigation did cause us to revise the estimate to: boobies, boobies, boobies. However the issue of priority raised its ugly head again. We were very drunk. Anyway, without arguments over priority it would be impossible to form really bitter schisms and divided sects. That would lead to harmony, and where's the fun in that?

This is almost a cut and paste from my thread:

Finding out 'what' about life, is not going to tell anyone anything about 'who, where, how, when, or why.' Will science be satisfied with only 'what'?
By taking a model T apart, one will find that everything fits for a reason, but you'll not find out much about the designer.  Certainly not, what he looks like, how old he is, where his home is, how many kids he has, or what he does in his spare time.
Maybe, you'll come to a decision that, who ever he is, he has made his machine for some purpose other than to be used as a tie clasp or paper weight.
But an automobile is not IC.  It is designed for a purpose and it takes two other parts to accomplish that. One is a tank of gas and the other is a driver.  Neither has to look like Mr. Ford.

Who......Infinite Designer (God)
What.....Infinite Design  (Life)
Where...In the middle between infinity big & infinity small.
How..... And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of   the waters.  Gen 1:2
When...In the middle of eternity.
Why....For a resting place.
          Gen 2:2  And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made;
and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Isa 66:1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven [is] my throne, and the earth [is] my footstool:
where [is] the house that ye build unto me? and where [is] the place of my rest?

God's priority:

Day 1 he made heaven. (family, paradise)  Gen 1:8, Zec 9:9
Day 2 he made earth. (home)  Gen 1:9

Life is about family and home, in that order.

Does N stand for Native?

I try not to do too much of the actual torturing. Mostly I report on the effects of the torture and whether it's good security policy. I sometimes get to watch the torture but they normally keep it to the seasoned pros.

I need to have my data vetted before I'm allowed to use it. :)
