Jo Hovind, the wife of creationist theme-park owner Kent Hovind, stood solemnly beside her attorney Friday as U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers handed down a sentence of one year and one day in federal prison.

Jo Hovind, 51, also was ordered to pay $8,000 in fines and three years supervision when she is released from prison.

Hovind was found guilty in November on 45 counts of evading bank-reporting requirements. The same jury found her husband guilty on 58 federal counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes. He was sentenced in January to 10 years in federal prison.

Jo Hovind’s attorney, Jerry Barringer, said after the sentencing that he plans to file an appeal against the guilty verdict as well as the prison sentence.

I think that is a reasonable idea Wes. I'm just curious who is going to pay us in the U.S.(yes us, they stole the money from the taxpayers essentially) the $845,000 or so? No one. I'm sure any fines assessed on either of the Hovinds will take years to pay back.

Actually I'm curious how fines are enforced. Do the Hovinds have to sell (have it seized?) property to pay back immediately?

So maybe a [mostly] suspended sentence and a much larger fine.

Who knows. She's still a convicted felon either way.

Yep, that's the nature of crime, and why I disagree with the folks who think that Kent got a raw deal with his sentence.

Well, I tend to be more of a hard-ass, I guess. I don’t like seeing grown women make stupid decisions and “follow their husbands instructions,” for pity’s sake, what was the feminist movement all about? The way that women get a break in the courts all the time is due to men’s infantilized view of us, I fear, as well as the fact that many women remain codependent twits and are in prison for refusing to snich on the worthless bum – how stupid!

If Jo Hovind had thrown her hubby to the wolves I would have given her probation. Is it controversial for me to suggest that if the law expected women to act as autonomously responsible for themselves as men do, women would cut out the act pretty quickly?

Men let us get away with stuff. The runaway bride on television clutching a teddy-bear, etc. This is actually a fairly recent, and Western, view of women, whereas in many cultures women are treated like pack mules and are not spared hardships. Obviously I don’t advocate that, but women’s frailty and impressional nature is utter bullshit! I’m just saying, I think Jo’s an adult; she knew what she was doing; it’s her choice to be a fundy and marry a fundy, and do the fundy dirty deeds. She should do the fundy dirty time.

Watch her go work on her husband’s appeals the moment she is free. Yeah, and he'll probably divorce her then for some youth thing who's been writing love letters to him in prison. :p Not a flattering view of women, but a true one.

Oops, didn't see this thread yet when I added my comment to the "sentence pending" thread.

I'll go swipe that one.

Anyway.  Clearly Mr. H. was the prime instigator and lack of brains in that family.  A lesser sentence for Ms. H. was probably fair.

But some sentence of this sort was also fair.  Well before things got to federal charges, she had the opportunity to clue in and bail out.

I think she should have faced the same sentencing as a Black teenager- the maximum.

I think we all are aware that our criminal justice system is broken. That's not a reason to fail to punish criminals, nor to hand out disproportionate sentences in order to try to balance things that way.

Where's Judge Roy Bean when you need him?  I think Kristine is right; Jo's so all Boo Hoo, I'm sorry, let me out! And the Judge is saying okay you can get off easy cuz you were stuuuupid.

Looking at the bright side, there will only be 1 year's worth of emails about God's conversations with Jo.

No, no, the man is the head; Kent will complete all of Jo's sentences for her.

But not her sentence. ;)

I wonder how many girlfriends he already has. Maybe I should write to him pretending to be smitten so's I can find out. :) (You know what? Even I think that's pretty sick.)

I woke up this AM and lay in bed thinking.  It occurred to me that feminists should be demanding an equivalent sentence for Jo and Kent.  "Equal pay" and so on...

Well, Zen help me, I've tormented hubby number one.

*Makes soothing gestures*

I've only one boyfriend - plus 10 Pleasurian hubbies and countless blog concubines. So just replace your dirty joke with the image of me tormenting Jo Hovind with a snake...see, the nice snakey goes hiss, hiss, Jo screams, I laugh, bwahahahahaha. There you are, a nice comforting image to occupy yourself with...there you go... :p

One could make the case that more feminism would have saved her. I've known plenty of submissive christian wives who stifle themselves and follow the Head of the Household, and I bet that's what Jo was doing. From the transcripts I read she seems to be a submissive and dependent person, still--still!--taking orders from Big Daddy Dumbass.

*Gasp* I didn't even think of that!!! :O Eek, I swear by all shimmies that's not what I meant!!!

Oh, dear. I didn't get that joke at all. What I meant was all the screwed-up female jailbird groupies who write to a guy in prison, you know, like all these women who are sending love letters to Scott Peterson, etc. That's what I meant. That's what I meant! *Blush*

It is more than strange that the whole equality thing seems to sometimes dissapear in court rulings.

I hadn't read your previous posts when I wrote that. It's now very clear to me that you meant actual girlfriends. Sorry for my misunderstanding.

Hrm.

I think the sentencing difference is probably due to the difference in the actual crimes committed.   Jo Hovind was charged with and convicted of 44 counts of evading reporting requirements -- she was signatory to 44 cash transactions just under the 10,000USD minimum banks are required to report.

Kent Hovind on the other hand was convicted of 12 charges of failing to pay employee-related taxes (FICA and SS withdrawals and such, I imagine),  1 count of "corruptly endeavoring to obstruct and impede the administration of the internal revenue laws",   *and* 45 counts of evading reporting requirements.

I do think that the 13 other crimes of greater magnitude commited by Kent Hovind alone account for the difference in sentencing perfectly well.

Certainly, the woman should have gotten the hell out of dodge and spilled all she knew as soon as she realized what was going on --  but I am inclined to wonder how much she actually knew,  given the tendency of fundies to have extreme power imbalances in their marriages.
