I'm back.

Was I missed?

I was without electricity for 6 days.

Same here, but I'm under no illusion that I was missed.

Same one got me, too. Second one in three years. And after six days missed at school, we might as well be starting over from scratch.

Who did you say you were, again?

You didn't miss too much. RichardTHughes left. I think he couldn't handle Louis anymore.

I live in the Cleveland area. I've had power but many around here haven't. All I got to say is that is one hell of a fucking hurricane that can come aboard from the Gulf of Mexico and still pack that kind of wallop in northern Ohio.

Crap yes, I'm ~800 miles from the gulf coast.

There were huge trees and branches down on every block; shingles and siding all over the place.

I'm near Dayton Ohio.

Wow. I saw back a week ago that they were predicting Ike to pass up to the Great Lakes area, and expected to see some of it here. That didn't happen, though we had plenty of rain during the time Ike was hitting Texas. It sounds like it did hit you folks just three or fours hours drive away from here (Lansing, MI area), though.

Glad you're OK. It looks like you have a lot of work on your hands!

Regarding the hurricane in Texas - the only figure I've seen for the number of dead has been about 30. I find it hard to believe that, after about 100,000 did not evacuate and with all the devastation, there are not many more who were killed. Are there any estimates for the number of people who have not been found safe? Why do the news media seem to be showing no interest or have I missed something? Are their minds completely occupied by the election and the financial news?

I have it on good evidence (from Arden) that this is not the case.

It's five dollars maximum. And even that's debatable.

Still, Steve *IS* right about one thing: y'all were missed even if you didn't know it.

From the Outer Banks of North Carolina to the Panama/Columbia border, we wish you a hearty "Welcome to our world".  I remember needing 8 hours to chainsaw a four foot diameter oak that blocked my drive after Fran in '96. There were three more on the property that, thankfully, fell in harmless areas.  Hundred years to grow and gone in a night.

Now, can you send down some blizzards?  I was a toddler and small child in Columbus and I miss me some snow sumpin turrible.  :D

Diane and I had a house on the West End of Galveston Island back when we were doing the grad student thing and teaching at Texas A&M Galveston. It was in Sea Isle on Hardin drive. I've been trying to find decent aerial photos or video of the West End since Ike went through, and there just doesn't seem to be much available. I did find one that started at the extreme west tip of the island, and it ends with a shot of the very easternmost street in Sea Isle, but it dipped to the south while going by Sea Isle, so I can't really see what damage happened on our old street. What I've seen of the Sea Isle stuff makes it look like most of the houses are mostly intact. What debris there is seems to mostly be breakaway ground-floor stuff (part of the building code out on the West End is that at ground level, all structures must be made such that they will detach from pilings in high wind or wave action).

Hmmm. You mean in 30 years it might be safe for Lenny and Richard to come back?

I am responsible for neither's absence as you well know.

Richard has absented himself because he felt he couldn't in good conscience mock the excesses of UD's comedy "moderation" whilst he stood in disagreement with the actions of Steve's moderation here.

Lenny left because he chucked a snit when demonstrated to be a quote mining erecter of straw men on one specific issue.

Your comedy line on this issue fails to amuse.

Wes, I just got off the phone with a friend that owns a beach house on the west end of the island. His house was two blocks from the beach. He said it appeared that most of the damage was at ground level. His place has a garage at ground level, and the living area up on the pilings. Everything in the garage was trashed by high water, but it appeared the living area stayed dry.
