I tried to post a comment at FtK's blog about Senator David Vitter getting a standing ovation from his republican colleagues after his prostitution scandal, but it didn't make to post. Do you guys think this may have something to do with his earmarking of funds for "teach the controversy"?

Yes, I am sure you are correct. I enjoyed how during the Clinton scandal, Vitter's wife said if her husband did that , she would act more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hilary. Since I haven't seen Sen. Vitter walking funny, I must conclude she is a lot like Hilary after all............

It seems to me that this whole PZ incident is an attempt to generate publicity for this crockumentary. It would be obvious
that any viewing  open to the public in Minnesota would be attended by PZ. The fact they had an online registration allowed them to confirm this. My guess is they excluded PZ knowing he feels strongly about the evo/ID debate, hoping he would create a scene. When PZ responded to his exclusion calmly, they had to go with the "gate crasher" angle, knowing the ID crowd would promote that account for them.

I agree wholeheartedly with Louis. The PhDs I have met have for the most part been very likable folk. They were always as much fun at social events as everyone else. I have only a high school education, but throughout my life I have been an avid reader, especially non-fiction. The people with advanced degrees I have met have always been more than willing to explain things I didn't understand if it was in their field of study. There was definitely no shortage of hard partying folk, that's for sure.

Only problem is you know how many fire ant mounds are in this state? I think there was one every 6 feet or so alongside the road. It required concentration.

When we were flooded down here in Texas after Alicia in '83, we would see large rafts of floating fire ants. I put on some boots and waded around with a bottle of Dawn dish soap. I would drop a drop of soap into the floating ants and they would sink below the surface, hopefully to a watery grave.

Dawn dish soap actually dates back to 1973. I confirmed this with c14 dating (better known as a google search).

Davescot makes fun of the Google trends for scienceblogs.com, focusing in particular on the  google searches and websites visited.  Unfortunately, he didn't show the same information for Uncommon Descent.  Luckily, I am providing it for you:

And what can we learn from this:

1.  Despite what Dembski would like for you to believe, there is no groundswell of international interest in intelligent design.

2.  Despite what O'Leary would like for you to believe, there isn't even any Canadian interest in intelligent design.

3.  The second most popular associated website for UD is antievolution.org.  This means that the tards are wandering out of the group home.  It is left as an exercise for the reader to determine who the tards are and which website is the group home.   ;)

4.  Readers of UD aren't searching for anything.  And if that isn't a meta-commentary on the whole ID movement, I don't know what is.

5.  The spike in hits in April related to the release of "Expelled" was quickly followed by a return to previous levels, putting paid to the fervent wishes of the ID crowd that the movie would lead to an uprising against the Darwinist cabal.  Sorry, FtK, better luck next time.

If you were going to make fun of of another website's data, would common sense tell you to run your own site first to save possible embarrassment later? Also mdoesn't that graph look similar to the EKG of someone on life support?

So today was Venture 3 into the cow fields looking for shrooms.
Another disappointment. The past two days I found only very white
mushrooms. Those are def not Psilocybe cubensis, which have a brownish
splotch on top and a purple band on the stem. Tonight I didn't find
anything matching the criteria either, though I went much further out
than before. P. cubensis is somewhat rare, it turns out. But I did
find a brownish cap mushroom with a brown/purple stem and grey gills
as opposed to pure white gills. What the hell, I thought, so I carried
it back to the casa and stuck it in a ziploc bag in the freezer after
cutting about a gram or two off and swallowing that. No need to worry
about me, I know for a fact this wasn't any kind of Amanita, which is
horribly poisonous. Amanita usually has either white or red caps, and innocent
looking but evil white gills. This isn't that. Hopefully it's some
kind of psilocybe and 30 minutes from now I'll be hallucinating, but
95% odds nothing will happen. I think I'm going to need a car to drive
around to enough fields to find some which have P. cubensis in them.

One of the great things about hallucinogens in general and mushrooms
in particular is that it's virtually impossible to overdose on them.
You'd have to eat like 40 lbs of shrooms to OD.

A friend that went to college in Florida told me the cattle had to have grain in their diet to produce 'shrooms. IIRC, he said the stems would turn purple when you broke them.

Diane and I had a house on the West End of Galveston Island back when we were doing the grad student thing and teaching at Texas A&M Galveston. It was in Sea Isle on Hardin drive. I've been trying to find decent aerial photos or video of the West End since Ike went through, and there just doesn't seem to be much available. I did find one that started at the extreme west tip of the island, and it ends with a shot of the very easternmost street in Sea Isle, but it dipped to the south while going by Sea Isle, so I can't really see what damage happened on our old street. What I've seen of the Sea Isle stuff makes it look like most of the houses are mostly intact. What debris there is seems to mostly be breakaway ground-floor stuff (part of the building code out on the West End is that at ground level, all structures must be made such that they will detach from pilings in high wind or wave action).

Wes, I just got off the phone with a friend that owns a beach house on the west end of the island. His house was two blocks from the beach. He said it appeared that most of the damage was at ground level. His place has a garage at ground level, and the living area up on the pilings. Everything in the garage was trashed by high water, but it appeared the living area stayed dry.

Rumor has it the RNC has documented proof that Obama isn’t qualified but they’re keeping it to themselves as long as possible and hopefully forever but not if that means losing the election. By the way, here is a poll to crash:

http://www.expelledthemovie.com/

It's "Expelled," asking "Do you think Darwin's theories are outdated?"  Now forget the pedant's response, where you'd say "Of course they're outdated, that's why we don't call it 'Darwinism' like the lying propagandists do."  Partly they're counting on that, I suspect (that is, they know they're lying).

Right now it's 57% "yes," 14% "no," and 29% "maybe".  "No" should be at the top, in my estimation, since their point has always been to conflate "Darwin's theories" with modern evolutionary theory.

I think Dave's departure deserves a song parody.

(To the tune of "American Pie" by Don McLean)

A long long time ago
I can still remember
How that Tardfest used to make me smile
And I knew if DaveTard had his chance
That he could make IDC's people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But November news made me sadder
it even made KairosFocus blather
Bad news on UD's website
DaveTard, there, would no more write
I can't remember if I cried
When I thought about his wounded pride
But something touched me deep inside
The day that DaveTard fly'd
...

So bye, bye  Mr. UD TARD guy
Drove my browser to UD's website but the TARD stream was dry
And AtBC regulars were drinking craft beers and Skyy
Singing this'll be the day DaveTard cries
Thisll be the day DaveTard cries

Did Dr.Dr. write the books of TARD
And is denying science all that hard
If the Bible tells you to?
Now do you believe "Of Pandas and People"
'Cause you heard it underneath a church steeple?
And can you teach me how to "Gish Gallop" real fast?
Well, I know that all of you love TARD
'cause laughing at it's not that hard
You all surf the 'net for more
and are sure to share it if you score
I am a lowly middle-age Texas misfit
With a laptop computer and a place to sit
But I knew that ID was bullshit
before the day that DaveTard fly'd
I started singing

Bye, bye  Mr. UD TARD guy
Drove my browser to UD's website but the TARD stream was dry
And AtBC regulars were drinking craft beers and Skyy
Singing this'll be the day DaveTard cries
Thisll be the day DaveTard cries

Now, for many years we've been defending science
Yet some folk keep flinging TARD in defiance
But that's not how it ought to be
When the people voted for a new Prez and Veep
they told the wingnuts Sarah Palin you keep
In a voice that came from you and me
Oh and while DaveTard was feeling down
The UD site stole his banninator crown
When Judge Jones' courtroom was adjourned
A great verdict was returned
And while Dave screamed,"Obama's just like Marx"
The voters quietly rejected that farce
with Election Day totals after dark
The day that DaveTard fly'd
We were singing

Bye, bye  Mr. UD TARD guy
Drove my browser to UD's website but the TARD stream was dry
And AtBC regulars were drinking craft beers and Skyy
Singing this'll be the day DaveTard cries
Thisll be the day DaveTard cries

I have way too much free time on my hands......

That's all fine in theory Bill.
But what if God (or some other being) actually did create life?
Are you saying it would be beyond the reaches of empirical science to A) discover this, and B) figure out how and even perhaps why he did it?
If science is about investigation, why would it have to stop when faced with a scenario that challenges the limitations of the material world?

From CNN

Then, last month, the head of the endangered species program corralled 15 experts in Washington to sort through 200,000 comments in 32 hours.
(SNIP)

Assuming that each comment was seen by just one expert and they were working for the entire 32 hours, with no breaks and no chats with neighbours, that means each comment was assessed in under 9 seconds. Did they have Superman on the job?

Perhaps they hired Michael Behe, who of course can dismiss the comments with a wave of his hand, knowing what they all say without reading them.

ETA: Which might add a new word to the language. They've been Behed.

I think that word already exists, Lou......

As in: Like a pack of hounds on the hunt, IDC proponents went to the microphone at the Texas Board of Education hearing and Behed loudly.

Question for Albatrossy:

Saw this fellow on the drive home from the oil rig I was working at (I apologize for the poor photo, but all I had was my cellphone). The location is near Lake Limestone in central Texas. The nest in the picture was approximately 5' across and appeared to be made of sticks and twigs. The bird's beak appeared to be curved downward at the end. Could this be a Bald Eagle?

Looks like a Bald Eagle (and nest) to me.

I'm sure that somebody with the TX Wildlife/Game agency, or some Texas branch of the USFWS, has tabs on every Bald Eagle nesting in the state. You might see what they can tell you about this guy.

I've mostly ignored this thread, but it's turning out to be pretty cool.

I have exchanged a few more e-mails with Mr. Brent Ortego of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. He asked me to send him a Google map with the location of the nest I saw marked on it. This was the reply:

"This is a new site, but it might involve a pair we have already been tracking.  Eagles have problems maintaining their very large nests.  It is not unusual for tree branches to break under the strain when a major storm rolls through.  Nests typically are replaced at 4 year intervals and many times this is due to tree failures.

We will log this nest location into our files and will keep track of this new nesting location"

I then e-mailed Brent asking about their diet. I mentioned that I thought I saw an eagle take off from a roadkseveral weeks earlier, but had only a brief glimpse since i was driving. His response:

"While the eagle is near the top of the food chain, it is not the most efficient predator.  It generally needs to be easy.  Food habit work has shown that catfish, softshell turtles and coots are some of the most abundant food items at nest sites.  They will opportunistically kill waterfowl and when they get desperate/lazy they will work road kills."

I'll post any further information as I get it.

Do you think Wes might like to recruit this bird for those days he would rather fish than hunt?

Louis,

I know that you called for a moratorium on such advice, but I'd like to share two simple rules:

1.  Hold your kid.  Don't be afraid to show affection.  Do your best to make your child always feel safe and loved.

2.  Minimize distractions.  Do your best to give your child your undivided attention.

All the rest are details.

Looking back over my handling of two, now 'twenty-somethings' (one who's given us two granddaughters already!), my biggest regret is that I didn't do these two simple things a lot more than I did.

Why would anyone take advice from a lying piece of shit?

Well it IS good advice, no matter the source, and that's the important thing.

Anyway, I'm horribly affectionate, my little lad is likely to suffer from an overabundance of attention and love rather than the opposite. ;-)

Since the little lad is also likely to go to boarding school he'll be appropriately toughened up. I'm relatively optimistic. I imagine that will change.....

Anyway, a good reason NOT to take Daniel's, or indeed any parent's, advice is because (as is painfully clear in Daniel's comment) some people try to live their life through their kids and in their dotage project their regrets onto others. It's a mistake I know about from personal experience and, whatever other mistakes I am guaranteed to make, it is one I am on guard against!

Louis
