The New York Times has an article about a PhD candidate who is a young earth creationist (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/12/science/12geologist.html?_r=2&th=&oref=slogin&emc=th&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin). Of particular note is that his area of study is paleontology.

The article goes on to discuss whether or not institutions should bar science graduate students who have fundamentalist beliefs that contradict the principles of science. On one hand it seems wrong to discriminate against potential students based on religious beliefs. Further there are successful and productive scientists whose faith contradicts their profession. But, given that the scientific community has problems communicating with the public, should secular institutions attempt to clarify the debate by removing the pretense of respectibility from future Behe's?

There have been several posts about this on Science Blogs over the last couple of days.  A couple of people have suggested so what, he's just a lying YEC scum, let him be, while others are for pulling his credentials.  Intellectually I say, so what, he's just a lying YEC scumbag, but emotionally I think he should be punished, but I don't think it can be done legally, so meh...

Think about what this guy had to do... lying for years, which is what it took for him to get a PhD in geology as a YEC.  He's like a sleeper agent, and exhibits the same kind of behavior that terrorists do - lying for Allah or Jeesus, all the same I say.   And they are all crazy too - 70 virgins?  Hah!  Give me experienced over virgin any day!

The guy is a total knucklehead.  Laugh at him and forget about him.

Heh I saw some comedian say that. "70 virgins? Pfffft. Give me one dirty girl from Vegas."
