OREM — Intelligent design is not yet a solid scientific theory, but it soon may gain legitimacy as an explanation of how Earth and its inhabitants came to be, one of the country's foremost proponents of the alternative to the theory of evolution said.

Intelligent design is slowly making inroads in the mainstream science community. Evolutionary scientists are increasingly arguing against ID in reputable journals such as Science and Nature, biological philosopher Paul Nelson of the Discovery Institute said Friday.

Nelson was one of four experts on a panel at Utah Valley State College's Religion and the Humanities Conference, "Intelligent Design: Toward an Intelligent Discussion." He was the only member of the panel to defend ID.

ID is a theory that organisms are so complex they must have been created by a higher intelligence or god. Nelson used as an example a comparison of a robotic dog with a golden retriever. If a robodog is created by human intelligence; it's possible that the retriever also was created by an intelligence, he said.

"Yeah, there's more people than ever showing us to be idiots and con-men, so we MUST be almost legitimate."

No one's deniying the possiblility, but as Jason Rosenhouse pointed out claiming that it is in any way evidence is the same as saying mountains are evidence for the existance fo giant moles. Hopefulyl at some point Paul will realise that there are a couple of subtle yet important differences between the two.

OREM — "Intelligent design never was intended to be a scientific theory, but we try hard to spin it to create artificial legitimacy for it as an explanation of how Earth and its inhabitants came to be", one of the country's foremost proponents of the latest effort at religious apologetics masquerading as science said.

"Intelligent design is slowly making inroads in the mainstream evangelical community. Evolutionary scientists are increasingly pointing out the clear vacuousness of ID in reputable journals such as Science and Nature", schill Paul Nelson of the Discovery Institute said Friday.

Nelson, a scheister, was on a panel of four at Utah Valley State College's Religion and the Humanities Conference, "Intelligent Design: Toward an Intelligent Discussion." He was the only member of the panel to defend ID.

ID is a poorly conceptualized notion that organisms are so complex they must have been created by a higher intelligence or god. Nelson used as a nonsensical example a comparison of a robotic dog with a golden retriever. If a robodog is created by human intelligence; it's possible that the retriever also was created by an intelligence, he said.

And he's right isn't he. Retrievers were created by an intelligence - humans.

Am I missing his point? Dogs were created from wolves by man originally. And most of the retriever breeds seem to originate from the 19th century.

Using IDers favourite research tool (ie Google),

The Golden Retriever:  The breed was originally developed in Scotland, at "Guisachan", the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks later Lord Tweedmouth in the 1860s.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever: In the winter of 1807, an English ship with two Newfoundlands on board wrecked off the coast of Maryland. Everyone was saved, and the two dogs were given to a family of dog lovers. They were later mated with local retrievers. The new breed, which was first used for hunting in the Chesapeake Bay, proved to be excellent. Careful breeding over the years has created an outstanding retriever with incredible enthusiasm and endurance.

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever (what a great name :) ) The breed was developed in the Little River district of Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia around the beginning of the 19th Century.

etc. etc.

LOL. Paul Nelson loses it.

"I mean it!" An agitated Nelson yelled, "I flew here! It took 5 hours! I want some f*&%ing money right now! Intelligent Design! Intelligent Design! Now give me some g*&^#$ned cash this instant." Whereupon Mr. Nelson became violent and began rifling through attendees pockets, in search of that sweet, sweet lucre...

Maybe it sounds better than philosopher of biology.

Not to be confused with "silicon-based robo-philosopher", for instance.

Or perhaps a non-biological, nonmaterial, super-intelligent, supernatural entity who does a bit of philosophizing between poofing universes and life-forms into being.

Indeed, that was the only thing trivially correct in the entire quote from the article; hence why I left it untouched in the first edit.

I just don't get folks like Nelson; their arguments are so pathetic as to be laughable to anybody with a modicum of sense, let alone any background in biology at all, and yet they just keep going...

the only logical conclusion is that it IS the money, in cases like Nelson and Dembski, and just plain insanity in cases like AFDave.

Nelson isn't in it for the money. He is a YEC True Believer, like AFDave and Salvador. If he opened the bible up tomorrow and read 'True Believers should only eat Kitty Litter' he'd be at the pet store 14 minutes later.
