INTELLIGENT DESIGN, a controversial alternative theory to evolution, could become part of the science curriculum in Scottish schools.

The Sunday Herald has learned that the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is considering provision for the theory as part of a review of the science course curriculum.

Intelligent design (ID) is one of a wide range of theories of origin currently taught as part of the Religious, Moral and Philosophy Studies (RMPS) SQA course, but could be moved elsewhere as part of the review. A spokesman for the SQA said: "It happens to sit in RMPS just now. If and when it does becomes part of the curriculum for science, which it may well do as part of this review, then that's where it could sit."

Scientists have already expressed fears that ID theory is entering science classrooms. An organisation called Truth in Science (TiS) sent teaching resource packs to every head of science in Scottish schools in September 2006. The material critiques the Darwinian theory of natural selection and promotes the idea that biological mechanisms are best explained by the idea of an intelligent designer.

Professor Andrew McIntosh, a director of Truth in Science, said: "We've had a lot of positive feedback about the DVDs, which included Scottish schools. There are quite a number of people who are indicating they are happy to use the resources."

...Ph D in chemical engineering and expert in flame technology, yet feels qualified to dismiss the evidence for an old earth and evolution, and substitute rationality with creationism. His agenda deserves to be more widely known in the UK.

Teach ID? How does one teach something that doesn't say anything? I don't get it.

Is this really likely to happen? After the hiding ID got over here recently is there realy any chance that it will be taught as science?

I'll e-mail them and ask if they would like to consider how stupid it would make them to put ID into the science section.

I really should get round to e-mailing McIntosh and asking to see his calculations showing that evolution is impossible thermodynamically.

This is a very sad story.  Things could go very wrong for the future Captain James T Kirk, if he doesn't have a Mr. Scott as Chief Engineer, or a Mr. Scott that has been brainwashed by ID...

Soory Captain, we have to surrender to the Klingon's!
The Enterprise just wasn't designed for me to get you mooor Poweer, ya know.  I learned this as a wee bairn in my ID class.

Very sad that the Enterprise only had one mission.

Aye, your doing well Stephen.

You are better. Everything I have said I learned here or on PT. My formal education on the subject is 0.

Funny thing. Most of the pro-ID people there seem to reside in the USA. On the whole the Scots so far seem to see right through them.

I'll let you into a little secret- my formal education was a chemistry degree, with some modules in geology and management.  My main interests just now are history of science and technology, reneacting, historical fencing, trrying to write SF and F, and reading stuff.

So all my biology has been picked up from the same places you've been.

Plus, for maybe 6 out of the past 8 years, I've been arguing with people online.  So I've developed a skillset to suit.

I used to post on the Sunday Herald forum in 2002/3, before it got shut down under thread of legal action from some chump called Lord Robertson, remember him, ex NATO head or something.

I got this reply from the SQA:

Thank you for your communication,

Science courses are currently under review, however SQA have absolutely no
plans to introduce Intelligent Design into these courses.
