This is kinda cool.

The short version in Science

The Abstract from PNAS.

The PDF of the paper (also from PNAS).

The long and the short of it seems to be that the gene microcephalin, which is thought to be involved in regulating brain growth, popped up like a million years ago, but only showed up in modern humans about the same time that Neandertals died out.

From what I can gather, the gene does something to give us a bigger brain (apparently I'm not one of the 70% of the population that got it).

So it ain't proof positive that Homo neanderthalis and our direct ancestors were gettin' freaky, but the motel bed is smokin' and there are only two naked people in the room, "if you know what I mean and I think you do!"

Phhhhh!

If we evolved from Neandertals, why are there still Neandertals?

*crosses arms and looks smug*
