I was participating on Usenet from about 1991 up until I needed to concentrate on getting my dissertation done. I don't have an exact count, but there's likely 6,000 or more of my posts that could be available there if the data were treated as if it were a useful resource instead of an after-thought. Yeah, I'm less than thrilled. I think I have some cause. Deja got it; Google does not.
I don't know about the cool stuff that is happening at Area 51, either, therefore extraterrestrial embassies are coming next year?
By past experience, the folks at Google do not value their Usenet data holdings. I think I need to see evidence of a change in that before I lapse into optimistic complacency.
Like I said, what they are doing with the news data looks useful. That doesn't mean that they can't be reminded to do better with other data.
