That's roughly the number of people Davetard's banned since Monday. This tells you that only the most disruptive people are bounced from PT/AtBC. People like JAD, Larry Falafelman, Great White Wonder--people who have some kind of mental deficiency w/r/t reasoned discourse. Unlike Uncommonly Dense, you can disagree here all you want, as long as you're not excessively disruptive. Look at AFDave's 400 posts, Paley's 770 posts, Carol Clouser's several hundred, &c. Davetard belongs in the first group, and should remain banned.

On the number, I'll take your word for it.  I'm surprised that it's that high.  You are 100% correct though that it pales in comparison to how many DT has "put in permanent moderation" at UD. Also, I didn't mean to imply that you said anything about GWW.  I was simply pointing that out to others that might not know.  Sorry, I didn't really make that very clear.

In fact, I sometimes think I'm pushing the envelope myself. I would have put GWW at (on average) about 80% rants/witticism vs. 20% content; but the content was there. I guess it's just that GWW's rants were a bit more on the extreme side in quality, as well as quantity, and around the time of the banning, there was essentially NO content, and the rants were off the scale! With myself, I usually constrain my angrier rants for specific folks; like the Clouserbot, for example, and the occassional other like her that pretends to knowledge about the ToE but obviously doesn't know shit from shinola.  Those folks PO me even more than pure creationists like AFD. However, if anybody is curious as to exactly what posts were getting GWW in trouble, the records should still be there on PT, if anybody cares to do a search for them.  shouldn't be too difficult.  However, any posts that got moved to the BW, or deleted entirely, won't be locatable any more. -------------- "And the sea will grant each man new hope..." -CC

It was years ago, but several years after I decided that arguing with crazies was pointless, and that my time was more valuable. Occasionally you'll see me briefly break that rule, but for the most part, I'm pretty selective about my discussions. The time and energy spend discussing something might seem free, but if nothing else, it comes with 'opportunity cost', as the economists would say. So I try to only put in the investment of discussing something, when I expect to get some kind of return. With crazies like moon-landing deniers/ evolution deniers / global warming deniers, you're usually not dealing with people who have the mental habits which makes it productive to talk to them. Except, as others have pointed out, when you consider the return to be the enlightening of the ambivalent lurkers. It's made a big difference in my life. I don't waste my time nearly as much now. If you came up to me, in 1996, and said, "God never gives you anything you can't handle" you'd be in for a 3 hour discussion of how unfalsifiable that is, that people die all the time, and dying certainly isn't 'handling things', &c. If you came up to me in 2006 and said that, you'd be in for the question, "Man, did you see that last Heat/Mavs game? I mean, shiiiiit. Is D-Wade for real?"

He made shots in 11th hour situations when lesser men--most of us--would have turned to jelly. Those shots are what separate the men from the boys. Put me at the top of the key, with a few minutes to go, and the shot clock ticking away, and my involuntary twitching would have been mistaken for a grand mal seizure.

I haven't read all the comments, but I got the sense that this has been building up in PZ for a while, and that he just got sick and tired of Lenny's tone. Where to draw the line is a grey area. For instance, I'd ban Carol Clouser, not because of her tone, which is infinitely more pleasant than Lenny's, but because she's failed to say one interesting thing in 4000 posts, and she just inexorably drags discussions to her kooky Old Testament hangup.

Seriously, heavy-handed moderation plays right into the hands of IDers and creationists, who, having nothing of substance to say, can claim martyrdom as a distraction from their lack of content. I know the clutter is annoying, but I still maintain ignoring is much more effective (I get ignored all the time and it really sucks) than allowing comments to stand.
