This excerpt from Your Inner Fish, discusses evolutionary "reasons" for obesity, hemorrhoids, hernias, apnea, hiccups etc. By Neil Shubin of U. of Chicago and Field Museum.

Thanks Leftfield - good info - especially the part about hic-ups, which I had never heard before.

Looks like another entry in the promising field of the study of stupid design.  When describing the layout of nerves from the brain to the diaphragm that control breathing, the article has this to say:

Quote
This convoluted path creates problems; a rational design would have the nerves traveling not from the neck but from somewhere nearer the diaphragm. Unfortunately, anything that interferes with one of these nerves can block their function or cause a spasm.

I'd heard that hiccups were related to our aquatic past, but I'd never read the specific description.  It amuses me to no end that hiccups are a tadpole reflex.

There's also a neat bit about the male dangly bits and the problems caused by their evolutionary history that would apply nicely to a certain other discussion thread.

More evidence of WADerloo. Shubin's book, probably as a result of his appearance on The Colbert Report, is currently #73 at Amazon. The latest over-hyped screed from Dembski, The Design of Life, is resting comfortably at #15,577.

No doubt this is all the evidence one needs to predict the demise of Darwinism any day now...

New Book: Your Inner Fish, evolutionary origin of hiccups, etc.

I read that as "evolutionary origin of chips, etc."  The etc. presumably including the newspaper wrapping.

Ahhh, the confusion of the uninitiated.

Chips, that is REAL chips, go well with battered fish. Particularly if it's a beer based batter.

Bear in mind this is (sort of) a British thing (even though it's a Russian way of cooking fish ad an Irish way of cooking spuds.) so chips =

as opposed to crisps=

Just call me Mr UK.

Except don't, because it would actually be Mr Great Britain.

(Look, I just felt that he should be told about the wonderous food that is Fish and Chips, and to clear up any potential confusion from anyoe, I provided pictures. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go to work, right after I find my pinstripe suit and bowler hat.

Oh, and that blasted briefcase. Weather is nice, eh?)

God damn it!

Swap UK and Great Britain around. Damn this being tired (and not being allowed to Edit)

And so draws to a close another enthralling episode of "Great Achievements in the British Culinary Arts."  Tune in next week when we talk about the best techniques for boiling meat.
