There appears to be no way to start a thread to discuss an interesting scientific issue without it being derailed by idiotic trolls.  The most recent example is not the first, nor will it likely be the last.  I see the exact same thing on PT, and it has grown equally wearisome there.

Frankly, I've simply grown weary of it, and am going to take the next week to clear out my PM box (there's still a lot of info in there I want to save) and move on to greener pastures.

anyone who wishes to stay in contact with me can use my email addy:

Icky,

I'd have to say that 95% of all your posts directed toward me had the smell of troll attached.  Why do you expect people to treat you with respect when you confront them with utter contempt in every sentence directed toward them?  Confront people in the way in which you would like them to carry on dialogue with you, and you might notice that the "trolls" don't seem as trollish.

Good luck with finding the perfect "pasture".  Just remember that in this debate one rarely sees a conversion.  We simply cannot fathom how the other side can possibly perceive these issues in the way in which they do.  The better option might be trying to find a way to live with each other without literally tearing each other apart.

Just a thought...I'll be going back to my blog now to swat at the gnats (ie. trolls).

You'll be back.  Even in lurk mode.  After a couple weeks of R&R.

Then that urge will hit again.  You know the one I'm talking about.  You'll read that inane, OTT comment that actually keeps you from going to sleep for an hour.  You can't resist and you'll post one reply.  Short, but post you shall.

Then you'll say to yourself "Only one reply per day.  That's my limit.  Yeahhhhh."  And soon your post count is up to five a day and you didn't even notice.

Admit it Icky.  Your an addict.  It's as bad as nicotene.

Well, I know exactly how you're feeling, since I left PT a long while ago over much the same thing.

But ATBC is different -->  we don't actually argue with fundies here -- we just laugh at them.

ID is dead as a fish, and they're all washed-up has-been forgotten nobodies, anyway.  I'm sure we're the only ones paying the slightest attention to their continuing antics.

No point taking any of it seriously anymore.

These options are not mutually exclusive.

But when it stops being fun hanging out here, a breather is necessary.  Happy trails to you, Icky, if indeed you move on.

Do rest up, and I hold out for the time you'll be back.  Though I do agree that starting a purely serious thread here is problematical at best, I hope a little R&R will allow you to swim the waters here for what they are.

Icthyic,

1) I go away for a week and you win an OM! Nice work, congratulations.

2) Done? Going? No you're not, get back over here right now young fella me lad.

You will respect my (total lack of) authoritah!

3) Have a few weeks R and R in real life then come back and mock morons for mild catharsis and general entertainment. As you know I too have keenly felt the lack of decent debate and burden of muppetry, but I think it is net wide as opposed to a local phenomenon. When ID was "fresh and new" it was fun to poke the loons, but it is so old now that all the smart people have worked out it is a total bag of shit, all the mediocre Chopra worshipping drivel monkeys who were fooled by Berlinski's bluster have gone back to crystal healing their dogs and chucking homeopathically masturbated sugar pills down their necks, what we are left with is the unpleasant task of mopping up the real bozos who are too dim to understand basic science and too entrenched in their little religious war fantasy to realise just how stupid they are. Contempt? They don't deserve that much!

So get back here right now and stop mincing.

And even AfDave appears to be bowing out other than to finish his debates (he does have 2 of them going).

Dembski is utterly a laughingstock with no credibility. Behe hasn't published any research in er, quite some time. The fundy's are at their churches praising Jesus or home snorting meth and screwing live animals while their domestic servants, er, wives are at the church sewing circle talking about the latest dishsoap and how it saves the skin.

But those less than contemptible little leftover fundy pilonidal cysts come to muck up non-fundy oriented threads now and then. Remember though, this forum has the express aim of poking fun at fundies. It's no surprise that they pop in here and there.

Talk about derailing threads...

Marry you? What? As in commitment?

{sound of gears grinding as Louis decides which way to go on an obvious bit of commitment phobia or bouquet catching comedy}

Hmmmm

{remembers bikini photos}

Yo ho ho my lovely! Marry you? Why waste time when we could be making Mills and Boon style lurrrrve? (Cue stallion similes, heaving bosoms, "womanhood" euphemisms  and violin music to stir the "soul")

{sound of iron skillet connecting with back of my head}

Second thoughts, better not. How about a passionate affair preceded by dinner, dancing and devilish debauchery guaranteed to leave you ruined for any other man, physically, emotionally and intellectually?

{sound of iron skillet coming back into contact with my head via a forehand return}

Ok then, what about a take away, short drive and a knee trembler?

{sound of the beloved dealing a resounding backhand volley to my noggin with aforementioned skillet}

Gruff handshake and conversation about sport?

Louis

P.S. Derailing threads? Bah! Icthyic will want some of this comedy action.

iidb debate on the historical accuracy of genesis

Dendrochronology and C14: Circularity or Valid Science?

I also discovered that he simply moved on to Internet infidels to try out his same old arguments on a new crop. He is picking up more folks who follow him around now though so refutations to his arguments often precede links to other fora where he posted the same nonsense.

He is getting weirder though and moving into the conspiracy camp. He is defending the notion that egyptians didn't build the pyramids and the same Ayala, Provine, etc. crap that he always uses. The last post on the dendro debate claimed that the late Wes Ferguson, one of the pioneers of dendrochronology perpetrated a massive fraud on the scientific community that eventually led to the erroneous idea that radiometric dating was valid.

It's getting a bit sick. Weak, flaccid, torpid, luke-warm.

Adios, Ichthy!

Hope a brief breather refreshes your jets and brings you back soon but, if not, don't forget that invite for drinks in the wild and wet Northwest.

An announcement of a visit here, or a PM, or a message passed through BWE, or whatever, and we'll set something up.

And gosh, FtK, did it ever occur to your "live and let live" self that, sometimes, saying nothing at all beats the urge to vent...  Next time, do as you say, not as you do.
