Stiff upper lip, eh Wilkins?  But it's too late, by creating an account here you've already soled out.

Welcome and watch out for the RichardtHughes character. He will tell you he is the Official ATBC Hazing Committee. But, there is no such thing. He just likes to pick on the n00bs.  Sometimes it backfires on him though.

See here for his attempt to haze ERV.

"Puns" and "good" in a sentence that lacks a "not" operator are an oxymoron. I don't intend to reboot AtbC, but erv made me come here.

I agree, In fact I'd go further: John Wilkins is my favourite Australian philosopher of evolutionary systematics whose internet avatar is an albino gorilla AND whose name is John Wilkins.

Make no bones about it, Wilkins is a shoe-in in the popularity stakes. I'd say that it would be an understatement to claim he had his toe in as far as approval goes. He is a man of great sole. In fact I'd say without fear of over-egging the pudding that he really could lace things together. Not only that his knowledge of IDCists could tar Sal's (geddit?) drivel with the brush it needs. Mind you, as he is Australian, I'd hate to have to foot the bar bill.

Do you think we could shoe-horn them into one post, or would we need a pair of pumps for that?

Just what is the singular form you would use?

"Y'all" is singular
"All y'alls" is plural.

* I lived in Knoxville for six years so I am entitled to say y'all.

I'm all for the spread of the y'all meme to carpetbaggers and yankees, but it drives me crazy when some actor/actress is trying to pull off the accent and can't understand that y'all is plural, not singular.

Just what is the singular form you would use?

Where does "all y'all" fit into the scheme of things?

The parts of the south I'm familiar with: Arkansas (where I was raised), Texas, Tennessee (but almost exclusively Memphis), Mississippi, and Alabama use "you" as the singular and "y'all" as the plural.  "All y'all" is used infrequently when one needs something expansive and inclusive of a large group (all of you).

Khan, I can't speak for Kentuckians as I've never actually met any to hear them talk.  Perhaps they've got a completely different set of rules.

"Y'all" is singular
"All y'alls" is plural.
At least for folks from KY who live in OH.

See Ive always said 'yall' as a second person pronoun, but 'yalls' as a plural possessive.

Me: "When can we fit a committee meeting into yalls schedule?"
Prof 1: "... 'yalls'?"
Prof 2: "lol, wut?"

Even Mississippi people give me shit for that.

When I lived in Knoxville, I don't think I ever heard the phrase all y'all used. It was just y'all and used for two or more people. I did hear a possessive form though.

In the Appalachians "you'uns" substitutes for "y'all".  By the time you get to Pittsburgh, this transmogrifies into "yinz".

A wombat would cost too much in postage. More likely a tiger snake, which are born pissed off.

I think it is only in Australia that we have conversations with neighbour's that we are lucky that we only have red bellied black snakes in the backyard and not tiger snakes

"Y'all" is fairly common in Missouri, but I had to go to Arkansas before hearing "All y'all".

I enjoy the way 'all y'all" has increased the variation in my profanity: "Well, fuck all y'all, then" has a satisfying "and the horse you rode in on" heft.

I kept from laughing by remembering these bastards kill people. (Not quite as often as the LA or NYC cops).

Missouri is interesting in that regard.  With folks from the southern part of the state I could say y'all without it being noticed.  In Columbia and the St. Louis metro, people would giggle when I said it.  Since I have a fairly light accent, the use of y'all was often the only time people would notice it.  I did have one coworker in Columbia who was from New York that would try to give me flak.  I would then translate the sentence for her, replacing y'all with yooz guys.

best usage, evar, true story

this dumb drunk redneck pig I know god blessim was riding around myrtle beach hanging out of a truck window being a dumb drunk redneck and hollering shit at girls on the strip there.  they were cruising you know.  and he was saying "i'd fuck you" you you you you like you know a dumb drunk redneck idiot would be doing, hanging out of a truck window and about 23 and dumber than a horny fence post.  and there were four or five girls in a group and he started you now I'd do you you you you and he lost count and said "Hell I'd fuck youns-all!!!"  which is of course what makes that relevant

needless to say he puked in the front seat.  and i don't approve of this dumb drunk redneck idiot pig but I do affirm an admiration for those who, when pressed with a difficult choice to go hard or go home, go hard.

if you are going to be dumb you have got to be tough.

IMO...

Because comedy requires a certain intelligence and way of looking at the world, and Creo's and IDCists just aren't hard-wired to do this.  If you are attracted to UD / ID you are more likely to just not get it.

Think about the posters at UD -  Dembski, Densye, Gordon, BA77 etc, and you see pretty clearly that the only comedy at UD is unintentional.

There's the "phylogenists" email list, the closed forum now run by Bill Dembski. Here's a bit of amusing wit from Casey Luskin for those on the "phylogenists" list. One of his fellow list members re-posted it on a Finnish-language Usenet newsgroup, putting it in the clear. Excerpt:

Quote

Scott definitely speaks "scientese".  She presents herself as a scientist,
which she once was, who is trying to do the right thing for science.  She
is very charismatic, funny, and very good at getting people behind what
she's saying. It's no wonder she's the director of the NCSE.  In the past
I've compared Eugenie C. Scott to Darth Vader because she is full of
internal contradictions, knows in her heart she's lying, powerful,
persuasive, and most importantly, she travels around representing the
dominating power (the Empire) and fighting the good guys.  All in the name
of ...well, I'm not exactly sure what her motivation is yet.  It's
certainly not truth.

Yep, loads of fun over there, right?

Wow, that's a load of bollocks, for sure! The paragraph right after the one Wes quoted is even more of a hoot. Note how Casey has to explain his analogy for the tards (can't leave anything to chance!!!), and then fantasizes about his heroic role in this saga!

(On the other hand, there is the rebellion against the Empire.  Small, understaffed, often outgunned and outmanned, but not outsmarted.  However, the rebellion has the people of the galaxy behind them, and most importantly, the Force.  Of course not all of us in the rebellion believe in the "force" (the analogy is God), but what unites the rebellion is the common belief in the problems with the current establishment, and the desire to replace it with something better.  When we introduced ourselves in the class, I should have said I was Luke Skywalker, but I suppose I was under the control of her powers at the time so I just said I was Casey, an earth sciences major.)

Wow, that's a load of bollocks, for sure! The paragraph right after the one Wes quoted is even more of a hoot. Note how Casey has to explain his analogy for the tards (can't leave anything to chance!!!), and then fantasizes about his heroic role in this saga!

That was sooooo funny, I forgot to laugh

I am firmly convinced that I would be happy to discuss the complete vacuuity of Intelligent Design all night long with any and/or all of them, but if forced to make a decision based on totally superficial characteristics, such as color of eyes, breast size and/or hawtness, it would be (B).  I mean (A). Damn! Changed my mind, it's (D).

Can I sample for  while, then decide?

As they say, It is not the years, it is the milage. And I would add, "the off-road milage."  My truck is a 1985 Toyota with 116,000 original miles. Since I rarely do field work anymore, it will probably rust apart before it wears apart.

I, however, just returned from the dentist $1,100 US poorer, and that is only 1/2 down.

I hear ya. I put 250K+ miles on my '79 Toyota SR5 pickup before I "donated" it to my brother-in-law (a charity case if there ever was one). I figure I got my money's worth from it. It's still running.  That 20R 4-banger was indestructible.  It's heritage was the Toyota HiLux pickup, the dominant truck in Africa during the 60's.
Now I gots me a brand new V8 Sequioa, and it cost a lot less than my dental implants!

Dr. Wilkins,

I recall that you mentioned on TO that the pharse, "Social Darwinism" was coined after the Second World War by a historian.

Is my recollection correct, and do you recall a citation?

The phrase was coined by the only actual social Darwinian, W. Graham Sumner, in the 1870s, I think. There was a book by Richard Hofstadter which developed the claim that it was the basis for modern capitalism, and that Spencer was a social Darwinian. That was roundly debunked by Bannister, but the message hasn't got through yet.

Bannister, Robert C. 1988. Social Darwinism: science and myth in Anglo-American social thought, American civilization. Philadelphia: Temple University Press. Original edition, 1979.

Hofstadter, Richard. 1944. Social Darwinism in American thought. Boston: Beacon Press.

Sumner, William Graham. 1963. Social Darwinism; selected essays. With an introd. by Stow Parsons. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.,: Prentice-Hall.

Hofstadter, Richard. 1944. Social Darwinism in American thought. Boston: Beacon Press.

I also bought a PB of Hofstader's "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life" for $12. Bannister has edited a volume of Sumner's 'essential texts' which I migh buy if needed.

The joys of buying books in the US. If I did that here, I'd be waiting (and currently am) for up to eight weeks.

For a fixed annual fee, I get all my Amazon orders on two day shipping. Now, If I could only read fast enough to keep up.

I have enjoyed the Bannnister book so far. Thanks again.
