David Rintoul, aka Albatrossity, had a bad week
Quote
Yes, "under the weather" is a mild term for it. I was admitted to the hospital early Thursday AM, and at the time I suspected that I was having a heart attack. No such luck, it was a pumonary embolism in both branches of the pulmonary artery. In other words, my heart was unable to get much blood to the lungs or much oxygenated blood back from the lungs. The back pressure on the right side of the heart apparently sent it into atrial fibrillations. I sepnt 2 nights in the ICU, had two catheterizations done (one to put a "filter" in my vena cava to catcah any new clots from my legs, and am now in a period to testing dosages of various anti-coagulants before they will let me go. Probably at least 4-5 more days in the hospital, but at least I am out of the ICU and improving every day!

Owwwwww.  I hope the whole Albatrossic family is coping OK, and you get out soon.  And also you've been given a window bed, and your bins.  If not, enjoy Grrl's mystery birds whilst you're recovering.

Thankfully it looks like we don't need to start writing the obituary yet.

Clearly evidence of dodgy design. A stiff dose of Enlightenment will, we all hope, do the job.

A few cute nurses wouldn't hurt, either.

Thanks for the good wishes. Things are looking up, although I will be here in the hospital for a while longer! Since I had been noticing an exercise-induced shortness of breath for a couple of years now, I suspect that it took a while to get me in this state, so I'll be patient in getting better as well. I do have a window in the room; it overlooks the parking lot for the KSU football/basketball complex, so the bird diversity is minimal... (Those are avian birds, Amadan). I'll keep you updated as the case warrants. I think I dodged a bullet, based on the CT scans and the rest of the symptoms, so it's good to be on the mend.

I'm sure that FTK and Casey Luskin are praying for you.  And if I find out where they are hiding, I will make them stop.

Take care of yourself, and good luck with the nurses.  And I am sure this is totally NOT Louis's fault for failing to meet up with you, when you were doing your last European Tour.

Dave!  Jeremy told me a few days ago that you were in the hospital, but we weren't sure how serious it was.  I was worried about you!  I'm glad to hear you're on the mend, and I'll be praying thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery. :)  I sent an email to your KSU address, but it's probably buried by now.

Get well soon!!!!

{delurks}

Have you considered the healing power of prayer, positive thought and magnet therapy? I've heard that homeopathic doses of echinacea and tea tree oil are very effective for your condition. Also, considering the principle of treating like with like, take some coagulated blood, dilute to 30C with proper succussing at each stage, pour it onto a sheet of blotting paper and fax it to yourself on an organic fax. Eat the recieved fax as a series of little pieces over the next lunar cycle.

Converting to a major world religion is also recommended. I'm sending FTK to your bedside with some Chick tracts and a copy of everything Denyse O'Leary has ever written...

...oh alright, the above is obvious bollocks.

Get well soon Dave. I hope you and yours are coping and your recovery is going to plan. Double P.E.? You must be a tough old bird!

Maximum one nurse per day until fully recovered. Until then here is a soothing picture of a Dartford Warbler.

Enjoy!

And again, get well soon!

Louis

P.S. J-Dog, I blame myself. The guilt is awesome.

{relurk}

ADDED IN EDIT: Ok that was a coincidence. I in no way planned THAT! lol Speculation will now run wild.

Louis - Please save your 6,000 post for my recovery from the inevitable double secret cardio bypass surgery, or for Dembski's Radical Rectum/Cranio Removal surgery, whichever comes first.

Dave should be totally cured by then after ingesting the
Darford Warbler that Louis sent him. :)

ps:  Very nice post FTK!

Thanks, all. I am recovering, and yes, I am probably a tough old bird. But if Casey really is praying for me, I suspect I'm a goner.

Louis - Beautiful pic, and thanks for the suggested therapy. Is this something you learned in your discussions with the French?

Ftk - Thanks for the prayers and thoughts. I did get your message at my KSU address, but, as you suspected, I had too many messages and not enough time or energy to answer them all.

JJS - I keep telling you that engineers need to learn biology before they discuss it! Thankfully my diet won't change, since my blood lipids are good and my coronary arteries are now proven to be clean with that angiogram. The clots come from my legs, and may be caused by a hereditary clotting factor problem. The hematologist here has ordered a bunch of blood work, but the results won't be back for a week or so, since they have to send the samples off to the Mayo Clinic. Not many labs can do those specific tests, apparently.

TTeach - No thanks, we've got plenty of annoying creationists here; practically a bumper crop!

you should probably seek a new doctor.

If they offer to solve the problem by cutting your legs off, suggest they practice on themselves first.

Seriously, get better! There are birds you haven't seen yet. Keep in practice by oogling nurses.

Go you! That's very good news. The Wildlife thread misses you greatly.

Oh dear, just came in from the New Zealand outback to get a fix of THE FORRUMMM at an Internet Cafe - and the first thing I read is the news about Albatrossity.
Please keep getting better!

I thought I should give you all a short update, and thank you once again for the good wishes and concern.

I've been out of the hospital now for 8 days (which is as long as my hospital stay), and starting to feel like my old self again. The emboli are clearing out (my oxygen saturation levels are back to 98%), and the atrial flutter problems induced by the back pressure on the right side of my heart seems to be gone as well. I have more energy than I have had in several months, and the doctors assure me that this improvement will slowly continue until I am as obnoxious as I used to be. In a couple months they will take out the filter in my inferior vena cava, and daily doses of an anti-coagulant should keep me clot-free for the rest of my life.

Thanks again for everything, including Louis's 5000th post, and I'll be back to full CBEB activities very soon.

Hi J-Dog,
I just came back from sweltering NZ to freezing Munich and am going to post some pics in "Wildlife" as soon as I have sorted them.
