Maybe we can get JoeG and Larry Falafelandcheese to agree to be the legal team.  I'll donate actual money to that end.

I lol'd. Evolution is a theory about the origin of the universe.

I think we can safely say that they have no idea what they're talking about. They don't misunderstand or misrepresent evolution, they just don't know what it is, even in the broadest sense.

I am far from being a lawyer, but it seems to me that at present they have merely expressed an opinion that probably violates the requirements for the separation of the church and the state in a way that most people likely regard as not court-worthy. If they continue in what they consider a logical fashion, at what point would they be doing something that would open themselves up to being taken to court?

That word (condone) seems to be getting a lot of press lately...

And if someone could point me to the place where "God condemns" evolutionary theory explicitly, it would be greatly appreciated. I couldn't find it anywhere in Leviticus.

Is that so? Then I am so there in Kyrgyzstan or wherever exotic and out of the way country you're holed up in k.e.! :)

On a serious note, I was reading an excellent article on teaching evolution through open inquiry while managing time constraints in the classroom*. The instructors had asked the students to describe evolution in their own words in an essay, and whether or not they accepted it. The students responses were kept anonymous and were presented to the class only as percentages - "8 percent of you have confused evolutionary theory with the Big Bang theory - here is the difference" to avoid embarrassing the students and to show them that they were not alone in having misconceptions. This quote surprised me:

Quote
No students mentioned "intelligent design" or described any mechanistic ideas resembling it, leading us to conclude that this paradigm has not permeated popular culture or education in Ohio at this time.

So, a little hope!

I recommend this article. I haven't seen another that describes actual methods and shows pre-program and post-program results.

Left this at young Mr. Gornoskiís blog:

Quote
I find it both interesting and enlightening that while the crux of your argument rests entirely on fairness and balance, your blogroll consists nearly completely of sites sponsored by the Discovery Institute.  (Your link to the state Science standards discussion needs to updated.)

In the interest of fairness and balance, would it not be imperative to link to the websites and blogs of scientists?

For that side of your equation, I would recommend The Austringer (Dr. Wesley Elsberry's blog), The Panda's Thumb (a wonderful multi-contributor blog dedicated to this very topic), and ScienceBlogs.com (currently around 60 or 70 blogs about science all in one package).

I'll not add direct links, to avoid the spam filter, but a very little Google will get you where you need to be.

They're still tap dancing in Florida.

Just a bump and an update.

And via that post,
from the Miami Herald:

Quote
TALLAHASSEE --
It's called the ''Academic Freedom'' bill and it's supposed to give teachers the freedom to teach the ''full range of scientific views'' about evolution.

But should teachers have the freedom to teach the ''full range of scientific views'' about sexual education?

Republican Sen. Ronda Storms said that Democratic proposal went too far and had it voted down on the Senate floor Thursday, saying the sex-ed measure not only didn't belong on her evolution bill but that it could lead to ``prematurely deflowering kindergartners and first- and second-graders.''

Florida Citizens for Science has an interesting summary of the debate over the "academic freedom" bill today in the state senate.  The moneyshot:

Gaetzís literature example is a mess. Can a student hold the belief that the Captain Underpants books are great literature like Shakespeare? Good luck with that. Thatís what is happening in science. From Wikipedia:

Quote
Ronda R. Storms (born Ronda Rehnell Newcomb on September 5, 1965) is a Republican Party member of the Senate of the U.S. state of Florida, representing the 10th District since 2006.

Storms had an eight-year tenure on the Hillsborough County Commission (1998-2006), for which she is well known, and pushed a number of controversial issues. These issues included a fight against establishing the proposed Florida A&M University School of Law in Tampa, a campaign in favor of the sterilization of men and women convicted of child abuse, eliminating county-appropriated money for Planned Parenthood, and perhaps most publicized, her crusade for the county to officially abstain from recognizing gay and lesbian events held inside county lines, which was passed in June 2005 despite vocal opposition, most notably from openly gay topless dance club proprietor Joe Redner. She is also recognized by her quick tongue and often scathing sarcastic remarks, many of which she does not retract, stating ďI am not apologizing for who I am.Ē
