Were he here, I would give Charles a copy of this book because I've enjoyed reading it several times: Darwin - The Life of a Tormented Evolutionist by Adrian Desmond and James Moore, WW Norton & Co, 1991, ISBN 0-393-31150-3, 808 pages. When you read about what Darwin did just on the Beagle, it would be enough for one career.  One of his monographs would be enough for one career.  To consider the vast volume of work Darwin produced, handwritten, is remarkable. He was also ill for a great part of his life.  Watch the worm, puke, watch the worm, puke;  repeat. Amazing. Question for the crowd:  If Darwin lived today would he be as prolific, or would he be weighed down in an office writing grant proposals?

DB: He MIGHT be out in the field, but he'd likely still have to deal with the standard bureaucratic crap we've all come to know and loathe. I think he *could* be as prolific, but it'd be difficult. (I'm thinking of like Mayr or E.O Wilson) I'm only on p.104 of the new Desmond & Moore offering -- haven't had much time to read lately. It's great info on topics I thought I knew pretty well; we used to have "Darwin Trivia" contests in the anthro/archaeo depts. at my old school and I did okay, but this is a lot of new material to me. I don't think you've given us all the choices! Darwin was independently wealthy by the standards of his time. I would imagine that, scaling his Victorian wealth to the value of today, as he would be a multimillionaire by our standards he wouldn't have to write grant proposals. His voyages and studies, whilst extensive, are eminently within the financial reach of a modern day multimillionaire. I think, all things being equal and given modern technology, Darwin would be more productive, not less. In fact, in my more whimsical moments, I dream of being an independently wealthy "gentleman scientist" in the manner of Darwin and some of his contemporaries and predecessors. I even have a location and building design for my lab planned should miracle strike and I win big on the lottery! Yes, I know this makes me a tragically sad geek, but I don't care. I'd rather spend my (dream) millions on doing something I am truly passionate about (science) rather than squandering it on trivia. It does so by working hypothesis, based upon evidence, observation, predictions and falsifiability. IDC, on the other hand, is trying to advertise for its sunday brunch at the church, presenting none of the work required  to be scientific. If William Shakespeare was Science, IDC would be the local preacher trying to break each and every night into William's office to add a Deus Ex machina to Hamlet. Sure, it would be fun by entertainement standards, and would bring many to the congregation. But in the end no one would know what really happened to Claudius.
